Hidden gems of Novigrad-Cittanova (Croatia)

When we walk around the city we often overlook it's beauty. There are so many small details in any town, which we can either see or not. Couple of days ago I have been looking for those gems in Istrian town of Novigrad-Cittanova. In just 30 minutes or so, I have seen quite a few of them.
Behind the wall seen in the featured photo above, you'll find a beautiful, family managed Hotel Cittar. During the construction of hotel's new part builders discovered a valuable archeological site with historically important objects dating from 7th century.

Solar clock on the wall - Novigrad (Croatia)
I'm not sure if this solar clock ever showed correct time at some point of the year, but it seems it's missing a vital part now ... some stick to throw a shadow on the wall of the building. And if you wonder why it shows only hours between 6 and 18 ... it's probably because there is no sun in the sky during night, right? 😜

Ornaments with religious motifs - Novigrad (Croatia)
Beautiful ornaments and a plaque with religious motifs on one of the old buildings in the city. I wish I could tell you more about it, especially the story behind it. We can only admire the master artists of the past for their work and contribution to art and history.

Decorated entrance to a house - Novigrad (Croatia)
I would also like to know more about these 2 decorated human heads that adorn the entrance to this house. Maybe they are in some way connected with the tradition of carnival or some other pagan custom. Who knows! Interestingly, their face looks quite Asian. Another puzzle I will maybe solve some day.

There is always a hidden beauty in the old architecture, the work done by people who lived long time ago. I admire that Art and the people who restore the historical heritage :)

Indeed, we can miss many unique details in the streets we walk or the places we visit. That's why very short holidays are not enough for me. In the places I live, I look around a lot, every time a new discovery can be made :) The solar clock makes gestures to us and stops the nighttime :D The head sculptures in the last picture also caught my attention. Such hats are worn in local dances like folk dances in Turkey.
