Last weekend we were in Valencia for a family visit to see @silviadiez's parents. On Saturday afternoon we decided to visit the Albufera Natural Park, one of the most important wetlands on the Iberian Peninsula. La Albufera is a freshwater lagoon separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a narrow strip of land. It has an area of about 25km2 and is surrounded by extensive rice fields, receiving water from several inland aquifers and from the alluvial flow of water from the inland mountain range of the province.
In this special ecosystem, hundreds of species of birds and aquatic animals can be seen in the lagoon. There is also a moderate fishing activity with specific boats for the lagoon, as it is on average only one metre deep, so the boats must have a flat keel.
To complement the fishing activity, the fishermen run guided trips around the lagoon at sunset, where visitors are given detailed information on what life is like in this natural environment. The centre of tourist activity is in the small town of El Palmar and its Albufera harbour.
When we arrived at the small harbour almost all the big boats were filling up, and after some hesitation (Silvia's mother was not very convinced about going out) we saw a boat approaching that looked very new and seemed to be the last one to leave. After a moment's hesitation, we accepted the skipper's invitation to get on, and from then on, everything went smoothly.

El pasado fin de semana estuvimos de visita familiar en València para ver a los padres de Silvia. El sábado por la tarde decidimos acercarnos al Parque Natural de La Albufera, uno de los humedales más importantes de la Península Ibérica. La Albufera es una laguna de agua dulce separada del Mar Meditarráneo por una estrecha franja de tierra. Tiene una superficie de unos 25km2 y está rodeada de extensos campos de arroz, recibe el agua de varios acuíferos interiores y del flujo de aguas de aluvión de la sierra interior de la provincia.
En este ecosistema tan especial se cuentan por centenares las especies de aves y animales acuáticos que se pueden ver en la laguna. También hay una moderada actividad pesquera con embarcaciones específicas para la laguna, ya que de promedio solo tiene un metro de profundidad, por lo que las barcas deben tener la quilla plana.
Para complementar la actividad pesquera, los pescadores hacen viajes guiados por toda la laguna a la puesta de sol, en la que los visitantes reciben información detallada de cómo es la vida en ese entorno natural. El centro de la actividad turística está en la pequeña localidad de El Palmar y su puerto de Albufera.
Cuando llegamos al pequeño puerto casi todas las barcas grandes estaban completando su aforo, y después de un rato dudando (la madre de Silvia no estaba muy convencida de salir) vimos que se acercaba un barca que tenía un aspecto muy nuevo y que parecía ser la última que iba a salir. Tras un momento de duda, aceptamos la invitación del patrón a subir. y a partir de ahí, todo fue estupendamente.

he Albufera and is one of only two fisherwomen licensed to fish in the area. She explained in detail the characteristics of the environment and its fauna, as well as personal experiences that helped us to better understand this protected area.
