It's Really Important to Know Your Limits... and Stay in Bounds!

in WORLD OF XPILARlast year

"Setting appropriate boundaries" has been an important buzz-phrase in the self-improvement field for several decades now.

Something I feel is at least as important — but gets talked about a lot less — is knowing your limits.

Do You Know Your Limits?

Knowing your limits is a concept that extends far beyond just recognizing when you've had enough to drink or when someone has said something that's just one step too far on the scale of what you are willing to listen to.

Those tend to be rather obvious and in your face.

But what about the limits on what you voluntarily agree to?

In the field of volunteer work, I see a lot of people overextending themselves, in service of "helping others," and in doing so failing to exercise appropriate self-care.

It actually does not help anyone of you give so much of yourself in service of others — or a cause — that your personal life (relationships, health, job) start to suffer!

Once again, I ask: "Do you know your limits?" And, moreover, do you stick to your guns when people try to push you — or guilt trip you — to exceed those limits, ostensibly with the claim that you are needed?

Most people find it remarkably easy to agree to just one more when they are already in a state of exhaustion... or even just feeling overworked and frustrated by something.

This particular issue may be more important than we immediately think, in this modern world of ours, in which we are so often judged on how much we undertake and accomplish.

But remember: You're truly no good to anyone if you're out sick for two weeks, because you "gave too much!"

We often justify doing more than we want with the excuse "it's just this one time!"

Sad fact it, it usually isn't just this one time. For many people... it's just "until the NEXT time."

Quite a few clients come to me seeking answers to challenges, and they are not even aware that the thing that's truly the issue is burnout.

We can only do so much, and important that we occasionally pause and take stock of where we are... and part of doing so effectively revolves around first knowing our limits, and then being diligent about sticking to them!

Do YOU know where your limits are? Thanks for visiting, and Bright Blessings to all!
