Earth Day... and Being in Service of Helping People!

How do we best help those who need help?

It's remarkable how often people with helpful inclinations put themselves at risk in order to help others who are at risk.

On some level, I suppose society has taught us that such selfless acts are "heroic," but is that really true?

If you're suffering yourself, how can you really expect to help others who are suffering? Consider a doctor, for example. The doctor heals others, but if he or she makes him or herself sick in service of helping sick people is that heroic? Or is it just plain silly for not knowing that you should take care of yourself in order to be able to take care of others?

From a completely different perspective, making yourself poor in order to take care of poor people doesn't really solve the problem of poverty, does it?

In a sense, we have to be selfish first. Selfish, in the sense that we need to take care of ourselves in order to be able to take care of others. Selfish, in the sense that we need to work on our own transformation and empowerment before we can work on other people’s transformation and empowerment.

What's more, we often think we have to do too much in order to be of service. We convince ourselves we have to make "the entire world" happier and a better place. But that is an impossible task!

Consider this: those who are peaceful, joyful, and living in harmony with themselves often serve as a great source of healing and inspiration for those who are struggling. They don't have to actually do anything , they simply have to be present and share the light that comes from within.

And what is it we can really do to help people?

A lot of people mistakenly focus on the material world. But most people are not really starving for material things — in most cases, they just need a little bit more of this and a little bit more of that, but actual riches are seldom the answer. What we most often need is more inner wealth.

If you don't believe me, consider how many very wealthy people end up going on spiritual pilgrimages to find "inner meaning" in their lives. If their external wealth truly gave them happiness, they wouldn't be needing to take those journeys. And yet they do.

Just something to think about.

Meanwhile, today was Earth Day and so I'd like to wish everybody a very happy Earth Day!

Thanks for reading and Bright Blessings to all!
