🎃 Peter Piper's Pumpkin Picking Place

Disclaimer: This place has nothing to do with Peter Piper.

With Halloween coming up, the-toddler-gorilla old enough to get involved and being allowed to leave our homes and enjoy it, we decided to take the little ape Pumpkin Picking. We looked at a few different options and decided to go to a place that was free to get in and had a park and café.

Upon arrival, the-mrs-gorilla tried to be clever parking the car, driving through a space to get out the other side. Quite sensible you might think, apart from the muddy field and big slope (that had been cordoned off from the other direction) causing the wheels to spin and start to dig us in. Whilst she happily tried to force the car up the slope, I suggested that she should reverse (slide) back down to the original space in case somebody parked behind us and we couldn't get out.

Lo and behold, some other fool had done the same thing, couldn't get their car up the slope and had to sit and wait until whoever had parked behind them came back and allowed their slide down the slope to continue 🙄

As much as I'm sure you're enjoying my little car park story, this is supposed to be about pumpkins so this is what we found...

It wasn't quite what I'd hoped for from a pumpkin picking experience but the-toddler seemed to enjoy himself and because there was a nice big slope on the hill, the-toddler played a fun game of rolling some to the bottom.

The pumpkin in the bottom right corner is the one we bought and will be carving today (maybe) 🔪

The highlight (perhaps), was when the-mrs-gorilla asked:

Do you think those pumpkins grew there?

🙄 My response of "Yes, how else would they have gotten there?" amused those within ear shot who had just watched the-toddler-gorilla role multiple pumpkins down the hill. (Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, which makes me witty.)

Having lugged our lovely, fresh pumpkin up the hill to discover that it didn't fit through the small hole (£3), nor the medium hole (£5) and was obviously a large pumpkin (£7), I was accused of being a miserable git for pointing out that we could've bought a pumpkin from the supermarket for 85p. Was it worth the extra £6.15 to watch the-toddler-gorilla roll a few pumpkins down a hill? Maybe.

On our way out, as we passed the crates of Pumpkins from "Pumpkins R Us", I wondered if our Pumpkin would be rotten by the time Halloween was upon us.

I've seen (and commented on) a few pumpkin posts already this year - is yours ready for the weekend? Are you expecting many trick-or-treaters to be knocking at your door? Will you be popping a few of these bad boys in with the jelly beans? Or will you be closing those curtains, turning the lights off and pretending you're not home?

I’m glad that the-toddler-gorilla enjoyed his outing 🎃 Rolling pumpkins down a slope sounds fun! I would have joined him 🙋‍♀️ My favourite photo is of him looking at the painted hay bales. He got really close to them so I don’t think he’s scared of them at all. A pumpkin this size from the supermarket would have come to at least £3 so just £4 left to justify 😜 It sounds to me that the experience was worth it. I bet the the-toddler-gorilla thinks so too! I hope you get this pumpkin carved and maybe even share it with us 👻

He did enjoy it but we had to be careful that he didn't roll the pumpkins down into other children (so he wasn't allowed to do it for long). I've got some lovely photos of him which he might share in 15 years time 🙂

the-mrs-gorilla and the-toddler-gorilla carved the pumpkin yesterday but I've not taken any photos yet. Perhaps that's one for another day 👻

It is good that you kept an eye on him so there weren't lots of upset other kids and angry parents. It is always good to have the photos for memories even if they are not for sharing.

Kids (and adults) will have lots of fun next couple of days! Cool post, @the-gorilla.

It's amazing how a whole story was born from an ordinary day off :)

Halloween is not very popular in our country yet. However, my child is delighted with the decorations of this holiday. Every day I bring a new Halloween decoration and together we find a place for it. And although no one will come to us for sweets, because there is no such tradition yet, we have already prepared a terrible costume for a child, because she will go for sweets to her grandmother.

Ha ha. I have a tendency to waffle and could very easily have left out the bit about the car park - I would've taken a photo, but I don't think the people stuck in the car would have appreciated it!

As a parent, that's almost certainly the best part 🤣 What costume did you choose? Our 2 will be pumpkins and at some point we'll throw a sheet over them and turn them into ghosts.

I have a daughter, so she has a black hat, a black cloak and a black magic wand. All this is beautifully decorated with sequins. She will be a witch.

My daughter thought that there would be another Halloween at school, but now there is a vacation. Then this vacation will be continued due to a surge of coronavirus. That's cool - did you make the costume with her? It sounds like she'll be needing a broomstick to perfectly finish off the look 🙂

It's so sad that life is still being affected in this way - things are more normal here now despite the high number of cases (the majority of our population is vaccinated now).

No, we bought the suit in the store. As for the broomstick, it's a great idea, I'll definitely use it. Thanks!

🙂 Happy to help - a prop like that will take her costume to the next level!

Los padres nos sentimos bien , al ver a nuestros hijos disfrutar, quizás la calabaza en el supermercado era mas economica, pero tu niño no tendría el disfrute, la experiencia del entorno natural, ni la alegría que tuvo en la granja.

That is true - he did quite enjoy rolling the pumpkins down the hill 🙄

Hi, friend. Not so long ago we began to celebrate this holiday in Latvia. It was funny the first time the painted children rang the doorbell and asked for candy. I didn't even understand at night. Later they told me what kind of holiday it was. This year, I think that children are unlikely to come to ask for sweets due to the fact that we have introduced a curfew from 20.00 to 05.00. And the children went after eight in the evening. Good luck and have a nice day

Not so long ago we began to celebrate this holiday in Latvia

I sometimes forget that not every country will know about this and I don't think it was that long ago we (UK) adopted it from America although it certainly formed a part of my childhood as kids came into school with their nonsense stories of the tricks (vandalism) they'd played.

we have introduced a curfew from 20.00 to 05.00

Is that related to Covid?

Yes. And in addition, those who have not been vaccinated are no longer allowed into the big stores. And only 23% of the population are vaccinated. That's it.

Goodness - that sounds rather draconian. What worries me about measure like that are in their efforts to protect people, they're essentially locking people up. And there's no reason to believe that pandemics like this won't become more frequent.

That's the problem. Why do people not go to get vaccinated. And the answer is simple. I don’t know where your vaccinations are. Although I think that in polyclinics. And here they are made in stores and it is not known who. In polyclinics, doctors refused to do it. They don't want to take responsibility.

😯 That's crazy. They expect everybody to get vaccinated but you don't know how to??
