Hello my dear Steemians,

Couple of days ago one of the user who just created his account on 14/06/2021, that means this Monday and today it is just day 5 being on Steem blockchain was asking the users to Vote for him as Witness. I do not want to mention the names here but this is a screenshot from the date of creation of account.

Seeing that it makes me angry how and why this user think that he deserves to be a Witness. We do not know anything about the user.

My suspicious is that he is behind of the financial side of earning Steem, as Steem Witness, those user get daily Produced Steem Power

Therefore, it made me to do this post about Steem Witnesses

What is Steem Witness?

Those of you who joined Steem at very beginning like in 2016 or 2017 we know perhaps more about Witnesses because we were more interested in Blockchain as a blockchain and read all the necessary background information and rules.

The Steem Witness is the person who operates a witness server that is producing blocks and publishes a price feed of Steem/USD to the network.

The whole information about our blockchain posts, comments and activities are saved in those blocks.

If in normal life there is a central server that is storing the information for the companies and if there is hacker attack then one server could easily be affected. In the case of blockchains, there is no central server but it is divided between the witnesses who run the programs and doing updates. The data is spread among those Witnesses.

Of course they should work together and communicate, any changes that needs to be done to Blockchain is done after agreement of all those who run the service and new software implement updates when required that is called Hard fork.

Top 20 Witnesses

There are 20 Top Witnesses, who get one block every 63 sec, the blocks produced every 21 rounds.

During this rounds:

  • 19 blocks are produced by 19 Top Witnesses

  • Witnesses are paid proportional to their rank in the system. A witness at rank 30 can produce as many as 4 blocks/hour, compared to a witness at rank 50, which may produce less than 1 block/hour.

A STEEM block is worth 1 STEEM Power (not STEEM, or SBD)

Why some users keen to candidate for Witness

Financial interest:

  • There are many users who seeing the possibility of earning will be tempted and decide to candidate for Witness. The people who just joined the platform and only see the financial benefit and have no interest in the main aim developing blockchain and making sure that the users feel supported.

Loyal Pro-Steem Witnesses:

  • There are other users who would like to keep Blockchain running and thinking globally about the future of Steem. Many of us we know many of the names and see them actively taking part in lives of ordinary users, supporting one or another projects.

Voting for Witnesses

When you are asked to vote for Witness, you should make sure that you are not simply vote for any random one who asks you to vote but please think about:

  • How long is the person on Steem
  • What reputation the user has and what he/she has done for communities and for Steem blockchain
  • Is the person engaged and present for users or he is just there for his own financial benefit

What is the value of your Vote?

Unfortunately, not all our Votes have equal Power, it mostly depends on the Steem Power of users.

That means the newbies and up to for example “Orcas” or @stef1 , still have only 0.05% - 0,08%. That is why even when choosing the Witness it is important to have Steem Power.

That is another reason to Power Up and be able to make a decision so that your voice is heard.

Majority of the Top Steem Witnesses have support from the account with the most influence, that is called @dev365

If you would like to check the Witnesses, you can find all information in “Steemworld” the program that is running by one of the most famous user and developer, who is also our Top Witness @steemchiller. There are so many tools that we normally do not use but if you are curious just check it up, you may discover many interesting stuff for you about the Blockchain:

The final advice I would like to give:

We all know that witnesses have a privileged position in the Steemit ecosystem which gives them considerable power to make a decision and implement changes.

Therefore, make sure who you are voting for that is a serious decision and not just to please your friends

Thanks for the explanation. I've also wondered what the witnesses are doing. Now, I know it.

It is pretty complicated, sometimes while reading more about the blockchain it is easy to understand what is what. I am glad that you found it interesting :)

Estuve leyendo acerca del tema en tu publicación y eso me anima hacer una investigacion del tema para reformular los votos.

Gracias por colocar el tema

Disculpe no sabía.

Lo hice por una referencia a lo que mencionaba.

No sé que es spam pero no quiero recibir voto negativo por no saber que no debía hacerlo

Lo borro y listo

Thank you. It appeared I didn't know just one thing but, probably, the most important, about who actually chooses the top-20 witnesses. Very interesting. Something to think about.

Often we do not hear and do not see activities of Steem Witnesses, but their servers must run 24 hours and they need to make sure that everything is running fine, therefore, I can imagine that some of them have no mood for posting. Good that the blockchain is existing and we are still able to enjoy it :)
