“Rice Fern”

Pilea Microphylla also erroneously known as 'Rice Fern', is an annual plant native to Florida, Mexico, the West Indies and Central America and of the tropical South.

In the southern part of Mexico, specifically Campeche and Mérida, the local name is Frescura. The plant belongs to the Urticaceae family.

It has light green, almost succulent stems and small 1/8 leaves which contribute to its other nickname, 'Artillery Fern', although it is not related to ferns. It is grown as a ground cover in many areas.

Pilea Microphylla has been introduced in various tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is considered an invasive species in many countries around the world.
