_Onoto.

The Bixa Orellana, commonly called Achiote, Urucú, Rocú, Onoto, Bija or Benis is an arborescent botanical species from the regions intertropical plants from America, cultivated specifically in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Central America, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Peru and Bolivia. In Paraguay it grows spontaneously in the native undergrowth.

The oil obtained is rich in tocotrienols, beta-carotene, essential oil, fixed oil, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, flavonoids and vitamin C.

Different therapeutic properties are attributed to it: platelet antiaggregant, astringent, antiseptic, emollient, antibiotic, antiparasitic, antioxidant, expectorant, healing, febrifuge, stomachic, antidysenteric, diuretic, antigonorrheic, purgative, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic and lipid-lowering.

It is used against headaches, neuralgia, anguish, asthma, inflammation, excoriation, dyspnea and pleurisy.

The ground seed is used to treat measles, smallpox, stomach ailments, kidney diseases, dysentery and febrifuge, astringent and light purgative.

The pulp is used on burns and blisters. The leaves work against sore throats, respiratory conditions, kidney pain, skin and vaginal inflammation, fever, hypertension, vomiting blood, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, tonsillitis, abscesses, headache, skin infections and conjunctivitis. Crushed or boiled, they are consumed to control vomiting, as an antidote against intoxication caused by the consumption of yuca brava, which contains hydrocyanic acid.

The infusion of the leaves is used by women for vaginal douching and is very effective in controlling inflammation caused by fungi and bacteria. The fruits and seeds in infusion control the headache. It also has healing properties.

It is used in various cosmetic ways, where you want to take advantage of the characteristics of Onoto oil. It is easily incorporated into creams, creamy lotions, sunscreen, lip balms. The effects are to restructure the hair and help protect against ultraviolet rays.
