Quercus Coccifera, is a species of shrub, sometimes a tree of up to 6 meters, belonging to the fagaceae family originating from the Mediterranean region. In Venezuela it receives the common name of Chaparro.
The chaparro is typical of regions with a desert appearance and without any inhabited nucleus because the crops are not economically profitable, the climate becomes progressively more continental and therefore drier and more extreme in its temperatures.
The thickets that it forms are very important ecologically (thick forests with specimens 5 meters high on occasions and where it is accompanied by other species of the same size and climbers such as asparagus or sarsaparilla) and the holm oak with its acorns, although it tastes very bitter, it is the only habitat that provides protection in these areas for bird nesting, and food for foxes, rodents and wild boars.
