Impressionist Artist Hamit Görele - Club100

Hi Art Lovers, today is the death anniversary of Turkish painter Hamit Görele, who has been trying to innovate and renew in painting. That's why I want to tell you about him.

Görele, an Impressionist painter, was born in 1903. His surname comes from the Görele district of Giresun, the city where he was born.

Görele, who graduated from the Fine Arts Academy, studied at the workshops of İbrahim Çallı and Hikmet Onat, the important painters, while he was teaching painting. He won the second prize in the European Painting Contest he participated in this term.

Thanks to this award, the young Republic of Turkey sent him to France for education in 1928. His 2 paintings were exhibited in an exhibition in Montparnasse together with the paintings of valuable painters such as Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Bonnard and Lhote.

He worked at the Andre Lhote Academy in Paris for about four years. Afterwards, he came back to Turkey and started to chair the Independent Painters and Sculptors Union. At the same time, he worked as an art teacher in many cities of Turkey.

Görele and other painters known as the 1914 Generation of Turkish painting are innovative painters who focus on drawing and linear structure. These painters, including Görele, aimed to create an art language that combines the sense of universal of art with a nationalist approach. They also abandoned the imitative nature description. Instead, they adopted the sense of geometric.

In his paintings, Görele dealt with urban landscapes, figure and geometric abstraction applications. Görele also has nude works. He worked with live models for Nude works. These works are among the best examples of the relationship between figure and space. It is also seen that he melts forms with paint. In other words, he used lines and colors with a unique style.

Görele was awarded the Artist of the Year Award by the Contemporary Turkish Painters Association in 1968. 10 years after this award, the artist was given a State Honorary Certificate. He died in 1980 when he was 77 years old. The painter, who participated in many exhibitions around the world, made great contributions to Turkish painting.
