A regatta called Klipperrace

A while past we sailed on the Klipper Isis a sailing regatta called Klipperrace in Enkhuizen / Netherlands. Our crew was 18 strong, the boat 30 meters long and we placed overall as 9th. We had some ups and downs but overall it was a lot of fun. I shot about a 1000 photos while helping with the sailing.

The race consists of two races spread out over two days. The famous Three Cities Race is sailed on Saturday. This race starts with the spectacular anchor start in the Krabbersgat (its in front of the harbor) near Enkhuizen. Two of the three designated buoys must then be rounded. These buoys are located at Medemblik, Stavoren and Urk. The finish is again in the Krabbersgat.

An Olympic course is sailed on Sunday. The two classes start one after the other and the courses partially overlap, so that the field stays together for the entire race.

Joris and I brought the boat from Harlingen to Enkhuizen on Thursday.

He was pretty ill but still looking good - don't you agree? :)

Joost (In the foreground) is the owner of the boat - not quite sure what Joris does there but he certainly has fun.

We planned our route for the first day - Being fast is one thing but choosing a good route is important as well.

"Team red" was preparing with some coffee for the upcoming day.

Everybody took their places for an anchor start - we tried to hoist our anchor with a rope because this is faster than the winch but unfortunately the rope broke and we lost valuable time... :/

Joost and Joris walking the deck in order to make sure everything works accordingly.

The Welvaart and the Risico under full sail.

The Welvaart just looks awesome with so many sails.

Eduard under full pressure - he was working the jib sheet.

"On the 2nd day we needed to sail the Olympic triangle and we did actually very well. In this sort of regatta a lot of hands are needed to compete at a high level. Luckily the Klipper Isis, the ship we were sailing on, was well equipped with good people and good sails :) This day was especially awesome for me since we sailed hard and I had the opportunity to take a lot of photos. "

This photo explains it a bit more. Of cause the wind is not coming always from north :)

The traditional Olympic triangle course consists of a lap (starting with a beat or work to windward from the starting line to the top, weather or windward mark, a first reaching leg to the wing mark (also known as the gybe mark), a second reaching leg from the wing mark to the bottom or leeward mark), a hot dog (a beat to the top mark with a square run back to the bottom mark), another lap and then a beat to the finish line, which may have one end at the top mark, or may be set beyond the top mark. The fleet in action.

Full sails on the Isis.

We always had Jeroen on the fore deck giving signs to the skipper in order to achieve maximum speed.

The ship to the left is the Morgana, racing against the Deinemeid. Even though the Morgana got full sails up they "lost" big time in that battle.

In this regatta no body gives an inch but we do stay always fair.

One more shot of the lost half winder. This moment looked so amazing - we were pretty stunned.

You look the the left - You look to the right and everything you see are just ships and sails... (this is a panorama shot)

I love the action in this shot! This was right in front of the start line and the skipper made a mistake... look at the guy in the background on the other ship screaming and yelling.

Almost in prefect alignment.

All in all, a great event with a lot of fun and excitement. Maybe this year there will be regatta season again...let's hope!

Love the whole photo album, so many beautiful sailing boats and beautiful shots. I was th inking to do some painting using your photography, maybe on WE or later when I have time.

That is a real dream, I can understand people who can't stop dreaming about sailing away somewhere, just sea, sky and horizon :)

Sometimes the yachts go in a very tight formation. It's good if no one makes mistakes :)
Excellent photographs, since childhood I love images of sailing ships ... however, what kid does not like them:D
