A trip to the Udzungwa Mountains National Park

Try to imagine the situation. It so happened that the devil brought you to Tanzania. This in itself is not quite close, 14 hours of flight and with transfers and other delights. Well, now you have finally reached this cherished Tanzania. And what ... now you will calm down and sit quietly by the sea? No, of course not. The devil will carry you further along the roads and savannas, in order to see animals and birds. And again you are going somewhere. Why didn't you look at the animals in the zoo? You wanted to see animals in their natural environment! But to be honest, the differences are minimal. The mustache, paws and tail are the same? The same, no difference! The only difference is in the surroundings.
And then it happened, you saw enough of the desired animals and returned to the hotel. You sit by the pool with a mango cocktail, twist your beak and think - "Is that all? Is that why we drove here five hours? Now back? Is there anything else to see?"
We experienced approximately the same sensations after visiting the Mikumi Park safari. And then they kindly say to you: "If you go a little more towards ~~ the Canadian border ~~, then there (in the mountains) you can see a pretty waterfall. And you jump like a frog -" Oh ... ah ... umm... Yep, let's take a look waterfall! "
And there would be no need for you to think - after all, you are already at so far place from your home, and something carries you somewhere further and further...








This day of our trip was entirely devoted to the Udzungwa National Park. Everyone who has been to this park strongly recommended to go there as early as possible in order to have time to climb to the waterfall before the onset of the heat of the day. Of course, our family completely failed this point. We got up late, had a long breakfast and took a very, very long time to get to the park entrance. But let's talk about everything in order ...








The road from Mikumi to Udzungwa Park deserves a separate description. This trail goes around the mountain range of the reserve in a circle. In principle, this is an ordinary African road, if not for one thing ... The fact is that during the rainy season this road is heavily influenced by the water that flows down from the mountains. Accordingly, due to the abundance of water, this road regularly turns into shit into porridge. Then the rains pass, the clay on the road dries up and all this turns into dense clouds of dust.
I don’t know by what parameter to evaluate our luck. We visited this region during a major reconstruction of the main highway in the region. Construction dust was added to the natural dust: a dense cement fog enveloped the surroundings ...
I don’t want to think about how people live in this dusty hell - there are enough "interesting and unusual" things in Africa without it. I was especially impressed by the round-ass housewives in colorful outfits, brooms in hands, which they persistently swept the ground around their houses. "Oh, mysterious African soul!" - you will exclaim ...
Well, yes, we somehow do not understand ... First of all, why the hell to sweep the bare ground? Secondly, everything will instantly again be covered with a thick layer of dust. Dust on the glass, dust on the hood, dust in the engine filters, dust on the teeth, in the eyes ... dust, dust ... Lord, why did I even start all this ?!

An amazing feature of the roads of Tanzania, their unique color - this is the habit of the local population to arrange trade in the most inappropriate place for this. Special mention should be made of the talents of heavy transport drivers. When a truck driver drives off the side of the road, he takes over the entire roadway. Traffic jams occur instantly due to such trifles and can last for hours.

What is the main virtue of a traveler? That's right - patience. We have come to terms with the heat, and we will get used to the dust. A man, as you know, is such a brute that will adapt to everything.
We are driving, counting kilometers. According to my calculations, we should have reached our destination by now. I ask the driver if he knows what the entrance to the park looks like. Our driver Morgan is unfazed. He tries to call the phone number listed on the park's business card, but it turns out that in the region, mobile communications are extremely unstable. Then we resort to the old tried and tested method, we ask the first passerby for information ...

It's funny, but all the entrances to the national park are carefully hidden from the eyes of the casual tourist. There are no signposts or information boards on the road. We had a hard time finding the main office of Udzungwa National Park.
Each arriving guest is subject to careful recording and registration. Park employees enter guests on an official register, and then solemnly collect a state tax from each guest.








After entering the arrivals in the state register, the first part of the visit follows - a walk through a real rainforest to a small waterfall. The guide shows you interesting samples of various tropical vegetation from his point of view. Occasionally, birds with colorful plumage come across. The walk ends with a bath at the waterfall and a visit to the memorial stone dedicated to the Dutch Crown Prince, the patron of the reserve.
Of course, if you take the matter seriously, then it would be worthwhile to stay in the reserve for a few days in order to calmly and leisurely enjoy the unique nature of this wonderful natural monument. What can you see in an incomplete day? That's right, you can only see the tip of the iceberg.

What is usually the second part of visiting Ujungwa Park? This is a continuous two-hour march along the mountain trail to the top of the mountain range, which contains the Sanje Falls.

How to find the place where the ascent starts? It’s very difficult. It is safely hidden from the stranger. It looks something like this ...
You look at this simple picture and understand that you did not need an entrance ticket, registration, adding to the guest list. You could simply drive up here in your car and go up the trail without being accompanied by an escort imposed on you. There are no turnstiles, no cash registers, no wardrobe. The only problem is finding this place! If you go to Udzungwa Park, I recommend that you try taking a walk without wasting time for registration and paying taxes.

Представьте себе ситуацию. Как-то так случилось, что вас черт принёс в Танзанию. Это само по себе уже довольно не близко, 14 часов полета да с пересадками да прочими прелестями. Ну и вот вы, наконец, добрались до этой заветной Танзании. И что... теперь успокоитесь и будете сидеть на попе ровно у моря? Да нет, конечно. Понесёт вас дальше по саваннам и весям, смотреть зверушек да птичек разных. И опять вы куда-то едете, - дома-то в зоопарке вам не смотрелось зверушек. Вам в естественной среде подавай! А вот если так по чесноку, то отличия-то минимальны. Усы, лапы и хвост - те же? Те же, никакого отличия! Разница лишь в антураже.
И вот свершилось, вы насмотрелись желанных зверушек и вернулись в отель. Сидите у бассейна с коктейлем из манго, крутите клювом и думаете - "И это всё?! Ради этого мы ехали сюда пять часов? Теперь назад? Может тут есть еще что-то посмотреть?"
Примерно такие ощущения мы испытывали после осмотра сафари парка Микуми. И тут тебе ласково так говорят: "Если поехать еще немного в сторону канадской границы, то там (в горах) можно осмотреть симпатичный водопадик. И ты такой подпрыгиваешь ― "О...а... Да, давайте осмотрим водопадик!"
И нет бы тебе задуматься ― ведь ты и так уже у чёрта на куличках, а тебя всё несёт и несёт куда-то дальше...

Этот день нашего путешествия был целиком посвящен национальному парку Udzungwa. Все, кто бывал в этом парке настоятельно рекомендовали отправиться туда как можно раньше, чтобы успеть подняться к водопаду до наступления дневной жары. Разумеется, наша семья этот пункт полностью провалила. Мы поздно встали, долго завтракали и очень-очень долго добирались до входа в парк. Но обо всём по порядку...








Дорога от Микуми до парка Удзунгва заслуживает отдельного описания. Эта трасса кольцом огибает горный массив заповедника. В принципе, это обычная африканская дорога, если бы не одно но... Дело в том, что в сезон дождей эта дорога подвергается сильному воздействию воды, которая потоками нисходит с гор. Соответственно из-за обилия воды эта дорога регулярно превращается в гавн... в кашу. Потом дожди проходят, глина на дороге высыхает и всё это превращается в плотные клубы пыли.
Не знаю по какому параметру оценивать нашу везучесть. Мы посетили данный регион во время капитальной реконструкции основной автотрассы региона. К пыли природной добавилась пыль строительная: плотный цементный туман окутал окрестности...
Как живут люди в этом пыльном аду, думать как-то не хочется, ― в Африке и без этого хватает "интересных и непривычных" вещей. Меня особенно впечатляли круглозадые домохозяйки в ярких нарядах с вениками, которыми они упорно подметали землю вокруг своих домов. "О, загадочная африканская душа!" ― воскликнете вы...
Ну да, нам как-то непонятно... Во-первых, нахрена подметать голую землю? Во-вторых, всё мгновенно опять покроется толстым слоем пыли. Пыль на стёклах, пыль на капоте, пыль в моторных фильтрах, пыль на зубах, в глазах... пыль, пыль... Господи, зачем я вообще всё это затеял?!

Удивительная особенность дорог Танзании, их неповторимый колорит - это привычка местного населения устраивать торговлю в самом неподходящем для этого месте. Отдельного упоминания заслуживают таланты водителей большегрузного транспорта. Когда водитель грузовика выезжает на дорогу с обочины, он захватывает всё пространство проезжей части. Пробки возникают мгновенно из-за подобных пустяков и могут продолжаться часами.

Какая главная добродетель путешественника? Правильно ― терпение. Мы примирились с жарой, привыкнем и к пыли. Человек, как известно такая скотина, которая ко всему приспособится.
Мы едем, считаем километры. По моим подсчетам, мы уже должны были достигнуть пункта назначения. Я интересуюсь у водителя, знает ли он как выглядит вход в парк. Наш водитель Морган невозмутим. Он пытается звонить по телефону, указанному на визитной карточке парка, но выясняется, что в данном регионе мобильная связь чрезвычайно неустойчива. Тогда мы прибегаем к старому испытанному способу, мы выспрашиваем информацию у первого попавшегося прохожего...

― Братан, а где тут парк?






― Бвана, мы немножко заблудились...

Забавно, но все входы в национальный парк тщательно укрыты от глаз случайного туриста. На дороге нет никаких указательных знаков или информационных табло. Мы с трудом нашли главный офис национального парка Удзунгва.
Каждый прибывающий гость подвергается тщательной фиксации и регистрации. Служащие парка вносят гостей в официальный реестр, а затем торжественно взимают с каждого гостя государственный налог.

После внесения прибывших в госреестр следует первая часть "Марлезонского балета", прогулка по настоящему тропическому лесу до небольшого водопада. Гид показывает вам интересные с его точки зрения образцы разнообразной тропической растительности. Изредка попадаются птицы с красочным оперением. Прогулка завершается омовением у водопада и осмотром памятного камня посвященного голландскому наследному принцу, патрону заповедника.
Конечно, если относиться к делу серьёзно, то стоило бы остановиться в заповеднике на несколько дней, чтобы спокойно и неспеша насладиться уникальной природой этого замечательного памятника природы. Что можно увидеть за неполный день? Правильно, можно увидеть лишь верхушку айсберга.

Что обычно представляет из себя вторая часть посещения парка Удзунгва? Это непрерывный двухчасовой марш-бросок по горной тропе к верхней точке горного массива, в которой находится водопад Sanje.
Как найти место, откуда начинается восхождение? Очень непросто. Оно надежно укрыто от чужестранца. Выглядит это примерно так...








Вы смотрите на эту нехитрую картину и понимаете, что вам не нужен был входной билет, регистрация, внесение в список гостей. Вы просто могли подъехать сюда на своей машине и пойти вверх по тропе без сопровождения навязанного вам сопровождающего. Здесь нет турникетов, нет касс, нет гардероба. Единственная проблема - найти это место! Если вы отправитесь в парк Удзунгва, я рекомендую вам попробовать совершить прогулку без потери времени на регистрацию и оплату налогов
