Battle of Kingdoms - Macro Photography Contest

I doubt that there is a better organized society than the ants. The socialism of these insects, seen from human eyes, does work. They are specialists in construction, faithful to a collective idea that makes them strong against other species, they are capable of dominating the world and I believe that numerically they do.

Dudo que exista una sociedad mejor organizada que la de las hormigas. El socialismo de esos insectos, visto desde los ojos humanos, sí funciona. Son unos especialistas de la construcción, fieles a una idea colectiva que los hace fuertes frente a las demás especies, son capaces de dominar el mundo y creo que numéricamente lo hacen.

The same is happening with bees. Provided with a larger body and having the ability to fly, they share the same feudal system. They all take care of the queen and organize themselves so that nothing is lacking for her.

Lo mismo ocurre con las abejas. Provistos de un cuerpo más grande y teniendo la capacidad de volar, comparten el mismo sistema feudal. Todos cuidan a la reina y se organizan para que nada le falte.

That's what I was thinking about before I entered this contest. I reviewed the images I could use to participate. Parallel to that, I was writing about another photograph on my blog, and in one of those breaks, I saw a scene that I knew I had to try to photograph.

En eso pensaba antes de ingresar a este concurso. Repasaba las imágenes que podía usar para participar. Paralelo a ello, escribía sobre otra fotografía en mi blog, y en uno de esos respiros de descansos, vi una escena que sabía que debía tratar de fotografiar.

It was an attempt I had to make. I took my Samsung S6 cell phone and even knowing that it is an outdated phone and limited in its macro photography capabilities, I would give it a shot.

Era un intento que debía de hacer. Tomé mi celular Samsung S6 y aún sabiendo que es un teléfono desactualizado y limitado en su capacidad de macro fotografía, lo intentaría.

The miniscule scene gave a glimpse of a deadly struggle. The protagonists were multiple ants and a dead bee. The little insects were easily and desperately carrying the lifeless body of the pollen collector. They moved very fast and because of their size, I knew it was a challenge to immortalize the symbol of their victory.

La minúscula escena dejaba ver una lucha mortal. Los protagonistas eran varias hormigas y una abeja muerta. Lo pequeños insectos cargaban con facilidad y desespero el cuerpo sin vida del recolector de polen. Se movían muy rápido y por el tamaño de ellos, sabía que era un desafío inmortalizar el símbolo de su victoria.

With each step the ants made, I had to reframe, shoot and predict the route, in order to take any photo that would be in focus. The sweet point is more erratic when we do macro photography, especially if one has zoomed in on the camera to achieve greater detail.

Con cada paso que daban las hormigas, debía reencuadrar, disparar y predecir la ruta, a fin de tomar alguna foto que quedara bien enfocada. El punto dulce es más errático cuando hacemos fotografía macro, sobre todo si uno ha hecho zoom en la cámara para lograr mayor detalles.

The surprising thing was to see the agility mixed with a kind of desperation of the ants and the inevitable peace that their rival had for being lifeless. It was like watching a speed competition to get to their hiding place.

Lo sorprendente era ver la agilidad mezclada con una especie de desespero de las hormigas y la inevitable paz que tenia su rival por encontrarse exiguo. Era como ver una competencia de rapidez para llegar a su escondite.

At one point along the way, I saw how they descended what for them was a cliff. Then, I was shocked by their respect for their enemy. Instead of throwing away the rest of the bee, they tried to bring it down with caution. Perhaps it was because they didn't want to dislodge any of the bee's limbs, but it was the only moment I saw of coherence.

En un punto del trayecto, vi como descendían por lo que para ellos era un risco. Entonces, me sorprendió el respecto hacia su enemigo. En vez de arrojar los resto de la abeja, intentaron bajarlo con precaución. Quizás, se trataba de que no querían que se le desprendiera alguna extremidad a la abeja, pero fue el único momento que vi de coherencia.

It was like watching a looting scene, but seen as if it were a specialized organized crime group. The mob had claimed a victim. They were carrying with them the harvest of a quest they had made far from their beloved queen. I doubt that the bee was killed by the ants, but where it perished, they soon arrived to recover its foods.

Fue como ver una escena de saqueo, pero visto como si fuese un grupo especializado del crimen organizado. La multitud había cobrado una víctima. Cargaban consigo la zafra de una búsqueda que hicieron lejos de su amada reina. Dudo que la abeja hubiese muerto por causa de las hormigas, pero donde pereció, pronto llegaron ellas a rescatar su botín.

Later, I sat down to write again and was monitoring the path of the ants. I waited for them to pass by a place with better light or that would be interesting for the lens of my cell phone. I watched as they walked parallel to a hose that was lying in the yard of my house.

Luego, me senté a volver a escribir y estuve monitoreando el camino de las hormigas. Esperaba a que pasaran por un lugar con mejor luz o que resultase interesante para el lente de mi celular. Fue así que vi como caminaban paralele a una manguera que estaba tirada en el patio de mi casa.

As I lay down on the ground to take pictures, an ant stung me. Before I knew it, I was close to the ants' lair. There I watched as they tried to get a seed into their shelter. They made several attempts. The seed was so big that it did not fit through the hole that gave access to their kingdom.

Al echarme al suelo a tomar las fotos, una hormiga me picó. Sin saberlo, estaba cerca de la guarida de las hormigas. Allí vi cómo trataban de meter una semilla a su refugio. Hicieron varios intentos. Era tan grande la semilla que no pasaba por el orificio que daba ingreso a su reino.

In that struggle, the seed and the bee's body passed from hand to hand, the ants gained impulse and strength to make another attempt to save that food, but they could not save it. That was the last shot I took. I would no longer find any good shots if they entered their hiding place.

Fue así que en esa lucha, la semilla y el cuerpo de la abeja pasaban de mano en mano, las hormigas tomaban impulso y fuerza para hacer otro intento de guardar aquellos alimentos, pero no podían guardarlos. Esa fue, la última toma que hice. Ya no hallaría ninguna toma buena si ingresaban a su escondite.

Whether they were saving food for storage or offering it to their queen, I kept thinking how efficient that group of ants was. Their speed was impressive, as was their strength and willingness.

Bien sea que guardaban alimentos para almacenarlo u ofrecérselos a su reina, no dejo de pensar o lo eficiente que era aquel grupo de hormigas. Su velocidad era impresionante, igualmente su fuerza y disposición.

In the end, they were hundreds of creatures that coldly did not show hunger, but rather the impetus to live within their socialist system of survival.

Al final, eran varios centenares de súbditos que con frialdad no mostraban hambre sino ímpetu para vivir dentro de su sistema socialista de sobrevivencia.
