I took this photo from the left side of the Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal, a magnificent example of neo-Gothic architecture located in the heart of Old Montreal. I captured it during the blue hour, just after sunset, when the residual natural light mixes with the street lighting, creating a mystical and enveloping atmosphere.

The architecture of the basilica is magnified by the soft light of the street lamps, which highlights the pointed spires and pointed arches characteristic of the neo-Gothic style. I wanted to accentuate the intricate details of the carved stones, which are highlighted by the subtle shadows cast on the façade. Every element, from the Gothic windows to the sturdy buttresses, is highlighted, revealing the majesty of this building.

The scene is bathed in an orange light coming from the street lamps, contrasting elegantly with the deep blue of the sky. This diffuse light illuminates not only the façade of the basilica, but also the surrounding trees, creating a harmony between architecture and nature. The contrast between the warmth of the streetlights and the coolness of the twilight reinforces the mystical atmosphere that I wanted to capture.

On the right of the image, a lit street lamp illuminates part of the street and the façade, adding depth to the composition. The surrounding buildings are visible in the background, providing an urban context to the scene and emphasizing how this historic structure fits into the modern fabric of the city. I also took care to capture details such as parked cars and urban signs, which anchor the scene in a contemporary context while respecting the historical character of the place.

By choosing a slightly low-angle perspective, I sought to accentuate the impression of grandeur and immensity of the basilica. The angle allows to reveal a side view of the building, while maintaining the emphasis on its majesty.

This photo, which I took to capture the tranquility and reverence I felt in the presence of this iconic Montreal landmark, captures the beauty of Gothic architecture in a subtle, warm light. I am confident that this image, rich in detail and ambiance, will make an excellent entry in the Urban Photography Contest. It captures not only the essence of Montreal’s Notre-Dame Basilica, but also the unique atmosphere of Old Montreal at nightfall.
