Drawing with chalk II

in WORLD OF XPILARlast year

Hi friends!

Here is another example of a drawing/painting on kraft paper.
I have used 200 gr kraft paper.
Kraft paper has a smooth side and a rough side. It is essential to choose the rough side to draw on due to the better adhesion of the chalk.
Chalk is an excellent drawing medium with which results very similar to oil paint can be obtained and the exercise of drawing is always present.
This work was done using only a few colours. I used yellow ocher, sanguine, brown, yellow and white.

This first drawing is to get a general idea of the result I want to obtain.

Then a quick study of what the shaded areas would be.

Here you can get useful indications on how to draw the human face from the front view:

As you can see, unlike other media here, when applying the chalk the previous drawing is lost, so we can't always count on it, which forces us to be very careful not to lose our original idea, and this also helps us allows you to always and quite easily correct errors in the preliminary drawing.
After having stained with chalk I have extended the colors with kitchen paper and with my fingers.

Here you can see how I paint with chalk and then extend and mix the colours, this time only with my fingers. It is important to clean your fingers well when changing colours so as not to dirty the drawing.

I like the fact that when panning drawing then colouring may erase initial drawing, that gives a person who is doing drawing an opportunity to check once again the proportion and correct it before the final colours. Blending with finger gave such smooth skin tone like real skin. Like that light highlight of cheeks and forehead. How you can then store the drawing and frame it.

Thank you very much Stef for your kind comment.
There is fixative aerosol for drawings, suitable for charcoal, chalk or pastels.
To frame it, you need a frame with glass and passepartout.
Thanks for your interest, I appreciate it!

By the way, I used once such fixative for pastel, but if the colours before were bright after fixative they all became darker and the whole work lost its brightness. Maybe I applied it wrongly, have you noticed such effect?

Hi @stef1!
Sometimes we must consider the use of fixatives as part of the drawing process.
In the first place, it is necessary to avoid applying the aerosol profusely at one time, it is preferable to apply several light coats of fixative leaving a drying time between each application in order to avoid the chalk particles becoming saturated with moisture.
If certain colour or intensity changes occur in the drawing, chalk must be reapplied to correct them and, if necessary, reapply fixative. Or perhaps we should leave these corrections without a fixative.
Generally, the artwork is framed immediately upon completion to prevent damage. It can also be stored carefully and covered with transparent paper.
Regards.

I think when we tried we did not expect so much of spray, we tried it only on one. The idea of putting more pastel layers on the previous sounds good and maybe I will do when I am back to Scotland and see, but also will try to spray from more distance that might help too. Thank you,

Beautiful. Fabulous

Me encanta esta espectacular, como de unas manchas y difuminar los colores pasa a detalles perfectos en todo el dibujo. Es como dice usted hay que practicar. Feliz día.
