Persistence Matters!
I have really never been particularly competitive at anything. That is to say, I don't have any unique talents or skills that puts me above and beyond others.
I did participate in some competitive sports when I was in high school and at University, but I always felt that my primary competitor was myself, rather than other people. Outside the sports arena, my orientation has always been more cooperative than competitive.
Whenever I am participating in something competitive related to business or social things I always feel like I would be lucky to finish in the top half of the overall number of participants. They may not be better than I, but they are far more aggressively competitive. Sometimes that just made me feel a little bit sad, at other times I have just written it off as it being the way of the world.
In general, the only way in which I genuinely feel competitive would have to be in terms of persistence. I have the ability — and probably have had since I was a kid — to be more persistent than virtually everybody else at whatever task is at hand.
I believe it is one of the reasons I have always been fairly successful at writing and blogging. I was never particularly brilliant or insightful but I was very persistent and was always able to add something even when I didn't feel like it.
At a venue like Steemit, I think persistence is particularly important. I suppose it could be applied to social media in general, but the unique thing about Steemit is that there are monetary rewards at stake.
Going back almost 10 years, I remember that while my first couple of posts were quite well received, I also wrote several posts (during the early days) that I put a lot of effort and time into and they ended up earning absolutely zero rewards!
I imagine many people might get depressed and simply stop trying but success can often be found in the willingness to keep going when everybody else is fed up and tired.
Whenever I hear someone complain that they are "just no good at writing" I often try to explain to them that it may be less important to be a giften writer than to simply show up every day.
Of course, I'm not necessarily a shining example, myself, as I often have long pauses in my own writing! But at least I aspire to showing up every day.
Thanks for stopping by, and have a wonderful weekend!
