A Day of Sorting Boxes Hidden in the Back of my Closet...

in WORLD OF XPILAR4 years ago

I started a somewhat unpleasant task, this afternoon... beginning the process of sorting all the boxes that that been stored at the back of my large home office closet, pretty much since we moved into our house, almost ten years ago.

The pile back there is not entirely "original" to our last move, having been added to when my parents passed away, later when first my father-in-law and then my mother-in-law passed.

That closet was primarily intended to become the space in which I would store the inventory for my eBay businesses, but somehow it got taken over because it was the only substantial storage space not in a bedroom.

It's funny how you get used to "living with " something annoying, learning to put it out of your active mind, even though you know it's something you must deal with, at some point.

Lately, Mrs. Denmarkguy has been on a tear of watching "de-cluttering" videos on YouTube, and there's little doubt that we do have "too much stuff," by most measures.

Seems like it's not all that unusual for people in their 50's and 60's because we become "of an age" where our parents die, and then their stuff has a way of migrating to our houses to be sorted. Except... we tend to have busy lives fill with all sorts of other things in need of doing, so "sorted" quickly turns into "sorted, LATER."

And that's pretty much what happened here!

I decided to start the process with a box I knew would be pretty awful: Containing a bunch of documents, accounting, tax papers and other stuff relating to a business bankruptcy. A box filled with memories of lawsuits, court cases and goodness knows what else.

It was not a pleasant process, mostly because it brought up memories of some pretty awful times in my life.

Bankruptcy documents are one of those kinds of paperwork you're "supposed to" keep longer than pretty much any other kinds of records... as much as anything (here in the US) because there exists a particular species of low-life's known as "debt scavengers" who will try to collect on ancient debts, even if a bankruptcy has been long since discharged. And so, you'd better have the documentation!

But I have made the executive decision that has been long enough and it's time to burn that paperwork, so it became my "first box" from the closet to be sorted and taken care of. Now I just need to wait for a nice day to take it all outside and burn it in our fire pit!

Many more yet to come, but it was a start!

Thanks for reading, and have a great week!

How about YOU? Do you have any old stuff stored away that you "need to deal with" some day? What's in the boxes? When will that some day come? Give me a shout back... I think we all have such boxes and one day we decided to look through and maybe to through away some. On one side, I agree you never know you might need something, on other hand what if not?

The box I like very much is with old photographs of ancestors, friends and memories. It is like a trip to the past and always bring a peace to my heart and mind.

Memory is wonderful ability of brain to store the information but not only pure information but associated emotions. I always get impressed with that. The human brain is the best computer that exist.

I hope you will successfully work through the boxes :)
