Polish legend about a highland robber.

The robber was a Slovak peasant who was born in 1688 near Banska Bystrzyca. His name was Janosik.
Janosik, when he was young, joined the army of Franciszek Rakoczy, who started an uprising in Hungary against the rule of the Austrian Habsburg dynasty. The uprising ended in defeat, as a result of which Janosik was incorporated into the Austrian army. While in the Austrian army, Janosik decided to become a robber. While serving at the Bytčy castle in Moravia, he met the robber Tomas Uhorcik, locked in the castle dungeons.

Janosik helped the robber break out of prison, and soon left the army. He was bought from the army by his parents with a high ransom. After returning home, Janosik joined Uhorcik's gang.
The gang lived and hid in mountain caves.
Together with him, he attacked merchant caravans and robbed noble farms, manors and presbyteries. Uhorcik suddenly decided to abandon his criminal path, and Janosik became the boss of the gang.
Janosik decide that they will share the loot with poor peasants living in mountain areas. Janosik's actions made him famous as a highlander avenger of harm and a hero.
Janosik's actions greatly disturbed the rich community, which grew rich by the exploitation of uneducated and poor people, mainly peasants. Janosik was captured after about three years of operation and sentenced to be hanged by the last rib. Janosik could take advantage of the pardon and act for the benefit of the Austrian army, but he resigned. He was executed at the age of 25y.
