The name itself, Copenhagen, has an interesting history. The original Danish name for the word meant "trading port". Copenhagen is a unique city characterized by its canals, cycling culture, strong economy and happy locals. In fact, it's known as the happiest city in the world, due to its shorter work days, free college tuition, more vacation days, and levels of personal socializing. Apart from being the happiest city in the world, Copenhagen is home to excellent Danish cuisine, a magnificent transport system, stunning churches and museums and even a hippie community that attracts foreign visitors from all over the world.

LEGO House, the birthplace of the iconic LEGO brick, is a family attraction that all ages will enjoy. Those on a budget or just passing through quickly will appreciate the entry-free areas, which include nine themed playgrounds, three outdoor squares and the Tree of Life, a 15-metre LEGO tree filled with detail. Tourists can also choose to purchase admission to explore the experience zones, each representing the classic brick colors - red for creativity, green for role-playing, blue for cognitive challenges and yellow for emotions. Visitors also have the opportunity to learn all about the history of LEGO and its founders.
Winter in Copenhagen is bleak with very little sun and sometimes extremely large amounts of snow. Despite the snowy months, in the capital, from December to early March, the snow usually subsides quickly and rarely lasts very long.

Olafur Eliasson's first building is a castle-like office in a Danish fjord. When traveling to Copenhagen, don't be afraid to fully immerse yourself in the culture and test your Danish speaking skills! Even if you feel insecure, locals in any country usually appreciate foreigners who make an effort. When traveling abroad, a little effort can go a long way 🙂
While Danes generally have a very high level of English, learning and practicing the following important words and phrases could potentially make your trip to Copenhagen easier. Even if you don't try to speak the language while you're there, at least recognizing these phrases in conversation can help you find where the restroom is or know how much something costs.

The Danes are incredibly particular about manners and politeness, so be sure to be on your best behavior in Copenhagen. Despite the fact that the Danes are incredibly polite, don't expect to hear "thank you" when you visit Copenhagen. In the Danish language, the words for "please" and "thank you" are simply superfluous, so Danes rarely use these words in conversation. Danes are known to respect their privacy and really getting to know them can be difficult during your travels. It's not because locals don't want to talk to foreigners, they just live with the idea that all people are busy and have their own lives and don't want to interrupt, bother or embarrass anyone. Danes have a problem with superficiality and you won't find anyone being "fake" in Denmark or Copenhagen. This is one of the reasons they find the question "How are you?" for being so funny. For Danish people, asking "how are you" is clearly superficial, as most people don't really care how a person answers the question. Like many Scandinavian countries, punctuality is key. Relating to the ways in which the Danes are downright polite and well-mannered, to be precise, is just another plus to it.

You may hear the term "Hygge" while traveling through Copenhagen and wonder what it means. "Hygge" is a Danish term that doesn't necessarily have a direct translation or meaning, but more generally refers to being in a state of comfort, relaxation and peace with those around you, usually while out drinking.
If you love holiday markets in Europe, you might want to visit Copenhagen in winter. Yes, it's cold, but the city boasts a host of charming Christmas markets filled with unique gifts, souvenirs and, of course, the ever-popular mulled wine known as Glogg.

Hot dog and sausage carts abound in Copenhagen, and a trip to this unique capital would not be complete without trying a Danish hot dog topped with crispy fried onions, pickles and creamy recolade.

Hola @charter

Salud.

That last photo....what a fantastically quaint looking street, I am in love!!! It really does look like a great place to explore. Also, I think it is wonderful that instead of the locals making a person feel sheepish about not being completely confident in communication, that they rather welcome them and assist with kindness. Things like that are few and far between in this world nowadays.

There is definitely something to learn from them :)

Agreed!!! :)

So very beautifully described.
And you are so correct about their culture of avoiding superficiality. I watched two seasons on Netflix one Danish and one Scandinavian. Rita (about a school teacher) is still one of my favourite drama series on Netflix. I did notice the aspects that you have mentioned in your travel diary, even though these dramas don't depict the real way of people to total accuracy. But I still couldn't help notice these aspects.

They have a specific identity that we can learn from 🙂
