Gender issues
Gender in this sense refers to a male and female children. Both male and female are important, traditionally most couples prefer male child to female children. Great attention is given to the male child, girls are relegated to the background. The education of a female child is as important as the male child. When a girl is give equal opportunities with the boy child, she will be in a better position to help in all task culturally assigned to the male child, which place a heavy burden on him and are sometimes difficult or impossible for the male child to carry out.
In some cultures more attention are being given to the male child more than that of the female children. In areas such as the the health, culture, power policy, economy and law, male has advantage over the female ones. Some couples end up having too many children just because of looking for a male child. Even some women have lost their lives in this process. Maybe the may have been preferential treatment given to male children in the past. Women goes to school while lots of male child abandon schooling for one business or the other. Ultimately where will this lead the male child to?
Many women are responsible for the upliftment of the family, while some of the male in this family roam about drinking. Some women are educated and rich, some even have good investment . Women today have found themselves in occupation previously monopolized by me. Many women who do not marry maintain the continuity of the family name by having good deed. "Death is no respect of any person when it strikes" people always say.
In families there should be no demarcation as to who dose what. The both should define roles in every aspect of things. In Igbo land, parents regard their male children as being more important than the female children, with the believe that male will be the successor of the family lineage.
In conclusion, there is nothing wrong in a female owning their family house and land. In some Igbo towns, some families have started allocating house and land to their daughters.
