Karachi in Crisis: Heat, Load Shedding and Rising Electricity Costs
Karachi has been going through a really difficultt time lately, for quite few weeks with this crazy heatwave and to make things worse, we've been having some brutal load shedding. Power Supply has been going out for 12 to 14 hours a day in many parts of the city.

The situation's gotten even worse with frequent power breakdowns during the rains adding to the misery. And even though we barely have any power, the electricity bills are still shooting up and up. K-Electric's been hiking the rates like crazy, and it’s making it really hard for people to manage and barely survive.
Why Are Electricity Bills Rising?
Pakistan's been under some major economic stress for years now. The current account deficitt just keeps going up and the exchangge rate is all over the place causing crazy inflation. Everyone's feeling the pinch but these skyrocketing electricity bills keep hitting us really hard.
In just one year, the cost of generating electricity in Pakistan has jumped by 160%! The reason for that we mainly because we heavily rely on imported fuels like furnace oil, coal, and Liquified Natural Gas. With the Pakistani rupee losing value day by day and global fuel prices going up, our electricity bills are reaching record highs.
One big reason for the rising bills is the Fuel Charges Adjustments (FCAs). National Electric Power Regulatory Authority. (NEPRA) has this system where any changes in fuel costs are directly passed on to us, the consumers, in our monthly bills.
Fuel Charges Adjustments (FCAs)
FCAs adjust the electricity production cost based on the fuel prices each month. NEPRA checks and approves these costs, which then get added to our bills. Lately, FCAs have been going up a lot because of the rising global fuel prices.
For example, NEPRA announced that K-Electric customers would be charged PKR 5.271 per unit for electricity used in April 2022, and this cost would show up in our July bills.
The Impact on Residents
With this intense heat and the worsening load shedding, people in Karachi are suffering. We’re getting huge electricity bills, sometimes 100 thousand rupees, even though the power's hardly on. It's really frustrating to spend the whole night awake in the heat without electricity, gas, or water. Protests Against K-Electric
In response to this power crisis, people in Karachi are hitting the streets. There have been protests demanding an end to load shedding and fair electricity rates. Jamaat-e-Islami is leading one of the biggest protests, standing up for our rights.

Protesters are gathering all over the city real angry about the frequent power cuts , 12-14 hours load shedding and high bills. Jamaat-e-Islami (a political party) has even announced a sit-in at D Chowk (Karachi) on July 26th. Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, the Amir (The Leader) of Jamaat-e-Islami said they’re protesting not just for themselves but for the 250 million people who can't afford these massive electricity bills and taxes by K-Electric.
Everywhere you look people are out on the streets, waving signs and shouting slogans and protesting aggressively. It's not just about the power cuts but thhe total frustration of getting massive electricity bills when you barely have any power through out thee day. These protests are more than just gatherings. They are the cries for help from a population and society that feels ignored and burdened by an unfair and brutal system.
Jamaat-e-Islami's sit-in at D Chowk is expected to be very huge. Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, the party leader has made it clear that this is a fight for everyone suffering under the weight of these rising costs of Electricty. He's spoken passionately about how this isn’t just a political issue but a humanitarian one where millions are struggling to make ends meet due to exorbitant energy prices and relentless taxes. The hope is that this protest will force the authorities to take meaningful action and provide some relief to the people of Karachi.
