A Simple Act of Kindness: How a Puncture Repairman Made My Day || A Half Dollar Job?
For last some days I wake up late in the morning as I go to the university on my bike, my personal transport so I tend to sleep in and then rush to my classes, mostly skipping the first class. After classes, I do some work and participate in different society activities that I’ve joined, and then I get back to my research work in the evening and do other activities.
But today it was different for me as I had to reach early because I had a meeting with a senior doctor who needed my help with a case he got at the hospital. So I woke up early and did some morning chores before quickly getting on my bike. If you had read my previous post, you would have known that there was a petrol strike yesterday in Pakistan, my usual bike was out of petrol, so I had to take my other bike, which isn’t as good. I was riding fast because I was in a hurry, but suddenly my bike got a puncture and It was a very frustrating moment for me, first experiencing heavy traffic and then getting stuck
I tried hard to find a puncture repair shop but couldn't find any. I was walking with a heavy backpack, pushing my bike on the roadside, searching for help, but all the shops were closed there at that time. Finally, I saw a small cart with a man standing by it and some tires were hanging around. I thought to myself, “Can this guy even fix a puncture?”
I asked him if he could fix my bike’s puncture. Seeing me in a white lab coat, he spoke to me very politely and asked me to park my bike. I told him I was in a hurry, so he prioritized my repair. He had everything needed for the job, a machine to heat the patch and a small cylinder for air. Despite having limited resources, he worked very diligently. I was impressed by his work, doing so much on a small cart, all by himself
When I asked him how much it would cost, I expected a high price due to his equipment and the effort. But to my surprise, he asked for only 100 rupees. I jokingly said, “You are charging too much,” and he responded with, “You can pay whatever you feel is right, even if it’s just 50 rupees or nothing at all. I won't mind.”
I felt a deep respect for him at that moment. After all his hard work doing all work, he only asked for 100 rupees, which is just half a dollar (nearly 2 steems). His honesty totally had me and I ended up giving him double the amount he asked for, and his happiness was the most beautiful moment of my day. He thanked me sincerely, saying, “It’s a great favor you’ve done for me.”
While he was repairing my puncture, I couldn't help but notice the conditions he was working in. He was sitting by the roadside in a very dirty area, with water puddles around him, but he waited patiently, hoping someone would need his help. While we may think our problems increase his earnings, he was working honestly to help people in their troubles. He looked very poor. I asked about his family, and he told me he was the sole breadwinner, supporting his family through this work.
I thought about how we need more people like him who work with such integrity. Do you also know someone whose honesty has impressed you? Or do you have any local businesses that support your community? These people are essential to our society.
This experience touched my heart deeply. There are still many people at the grassroots level who are honest and work hard to help others, even with limited means. Do you know any such people in your country who work honestly and make you feel happy with their sincerity? Please share your stories in the comment section.
