I shall tread carefully... Much to the disappointment of Italians and Formula 1 fans in general, 2020 was a year to forget for Ferrari. Their worse performance in 40 years and 4 time world champion Sebastien Vettel also having the worse season in his career since joining Toro Rosso in 2007. For a team synonymous with the sport to do so badly won't have brought any joy to anyone. One bright spark however, was Charles Leclerc who demonstrated what a bright future he has, beating Vettel in 12 out of the 17 races.

As for the car, Ferrari identified the weakness early last season - previous wranglings with the FIA had seen more stringent regulations related to fuel flow (and the knock on effect to engine power) which Ferrari simply failed to get to grips with. This led to them experimenting for most of the season and failing to find the correct answers. The aerodynamics of the car had been designed around a faster car with a better performing engine which the FIA regulations had slowed down, not just affecting the straight line speed, but how the car handled around the rest of the track. Hence the disaster.

Now that the painful bit's over, let's look to 2021.

Vettel has been replaced by Carlos Sainz who in Bahrain's pre-season testing, was quicker than Leclerc on 2 out of the 3 days - a promising start. There's hope and optimism that the departure of Vettel will see a more positive working environment without a man who was so obviously unhappy with the team and in Carlos Sainz, they've brough in an individual who worked well at McLaren alongside (the incredibly awesome British driver) Lando Norris. Charles Leclerc has already stated that the atmosphere at Ferrari has improved.

Mattia Binotto is also optimistic about the work they've done on the car over the winter with the aerodynamics and new power unit in particular. I, like all other formula 1 fans, am hoping that Ferrari will be competing at the better end of the grid this season.
