What is a computer Network

A computer network is that connectivity created between two or more computer systems with the goal of resource sharing and establishing communication between the devices.

Advantage of having a network

• Instead of having to buy a printer for every computer in the office, or foe every office in the organisation, it is possible to have all the system share one or two printers, cutting the cost of buying many printers.

• The need to hire and pay a messenger in an office is eliminated as messages can be sent through the network more efficiently with no pay.

• On a network, it is possible to buy only one software and install it once on the server and can be used by all the client in the network, saving time, effort and cost.

• It's allows for collaboration, a situation where a massive task is cut into smaller chunk and can simultaneously be processed by different nodes on the network.

Types of Networks

Based on Network design, we have to types of Networks, the peer to peer network and the server based Network.

Peer to peer network

In a peer-to-peer network, the computers all have equal status and are connected together in such a say that they are all having equal privilege and responsibilities when processing data.

Advantage of a peer-to-peer network:

• It is Easier to implement and manage.
• It is less expensive to implement.
• No special software is needed.
• No access permissions are required.
• If any Node fails, other are not affected.
• The Nodes are independent of one another.

Disadvantage of a peer-to-peer network:

• There is no provision for data backup
• Security is very porous and lax
• Storage is poorly managed
• There is no provision for centralised storage

Server based Network

A server based network also known as client-server network is a centralised Network who's nodes are not all equal. In this network, a node called the server functions as a service provider, allowing it's resources to be taped and used by other nodes which are here refered to as clients.

Advantages of Server-Based Network:

• Storage is Centralized and properly managed
• Centralization makes administration easy.
• The speed of Data sharing is higher.
• Data can be easily backed.
• The network is easy to scale.
• Servers can service multiple clients at a time.

Disadvantages of Server-Based Network:

• A network administrator is needed.
• If the server is down, all nodes are affected.
• It is expensive to set up.
• Client are highly dependent on a server.
