Digitalization of World

2.png
Digital generation has been brought up in a time where pilots and cameramen were replaced by drone cameras. This is an up-gradation of skills, a smarter approach of present time towards a better future. When the word of digitalization is used, the mind automatically comes up with the simplest definition of an easier life surrounded by higher rates of efficiency in tasks with an increased level of productiveness. Is it really the case in real life? A realistic approach is much needed while considering all aspects of digitalization with respect to today’s world to reach a better understanding of this statement.

Millennial Generation VS Generation Y VS Generation Alpha

2.png
The millennial generation spent a huge part of their childhood without exposure to technology. They were introduced to computers but they had no access to portable screens. Generation Y being their successors had a huge part of their childhood exposed to technology but still, there were certain limitations. Nowadays generation alpha however is way more ahead of their predecessors in this matter as they are ruled over by technology with kids of this age opening up their eyes in an environment reined by digitalization. This generation does not know what it’s like to live without technology so this concept of using less or reducing its usage to a bare minimum is not realistic because this generation wakes up scrolling their newsfeed instead of going through a newspaper.

Cons Of Digitalization:

2.png

The world shifted from paper to a digital screen with a fold of decades. Newer generations prefer reading on the screen instead of paperbacks. Easier handling of countless books available only a touch away replaced libraries and a quieter place to read, think and meditate on one’s thoughts. Access to limitless knowledge reduced the effort of finding books in a library but everything comes with a price. The efficiency with technology pays the debt in the form of reduced socialization and declined health. A person today is surrounded by screens, radiations which one does not even know about gradually tattering the health of individuals apart from altering normal body functioning. A person sits all day long with eyes fixed on the screen, it not only affects their eyesight as their brains also get affected. It leads to diseases such as obesity with regards to eating disorders and reduced levels of physical activity.

Children today have smartphones in their hands way before they get a hold of a pen. Earlier kids used to listen to bedtime stories, imagining up their favourite scenes, creating their characters and filling up their minds with a colourful sketch of each passing dialogue. These stories got replaced with smart screens giving them access to countless animated videos at a single touch. A limited variety of books and cartoons has been replaced with a sea of animations and voices reducing a child’s ability to polish their imaginative powers. How often do people see these children play outdoor games, spill colours on their clothes, build sandcastles, use chalks to write on board and celebrate a win over indoor games? A 3-year-old is smart enough to move fingers over screens to find his favourite cartoon but not smart enough to learn skills like a fluent speaker of words, reading and writing.

Digitalized World Reduced Socialization Of People

2.png

The globe is now much interconnected to acknowledge people with their cultures around the world but an individual is disconnected from people in its surrounding. Cultures and traditions were studied in books and people had no idea about others living in different parts of the world. During earlier times celebrations or days of sorrow were confined to a population or particular place but now, a day is celebrated around the globe. A person is in contact with another one across seven seas belonging to a different culture and society through the internet or direct calling but all this effort of globalization has reduced the basic social contact of individuals living within a society.

A sign in the Corner Café in Annapolis,

Maryland says “We do not have WIFI, talk to each other and pretend it’s 1995.”

It shows how much social lives have been affected by the use of technology that now a hindrance in free access is required to make humans realize this basic fact. People prefer to be on screen rather than talking to a person sitting next to them. Newer generations are so concerned with what’s happening on their phones that the happenings around annoy them. The biggest side effect is seen in the attention span of individuals as it makes them less attentive towards their surroundings. Excessive use of technology has not only reduced socializing but is also linked to changes in speech fluency and different diseases like Adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) reducing life expectancy. All these negative effects together end up making these individuals possess less productivity levels in the society of tomorrow’s world.

It’s An Evolutionary Event:

2.png

It’s not about a particular generation, it’s something about evolution. Previous generations were not provided with these advancements and hence they had a different lifestyle. This generation is not responsible for developing these technologies as these things already existed way before they even came into existence. Generation Alpha is highly criticized for being excessively dependant on technology with negligible levels of socialization and activities however it’s the predecessors who are actually responsible for exposing them to this level of technology as they themselves built it with a vision of an efficient future.
2.png

It Is Our Job to Gain Maximum Pros of Technology:

2.png

The use of technology is in our hands because we built it so it can’t overrule its creators no matter how good the creation gets.

Paracelsus states that “Everything is a poison, nothing is a poison. It is the dose that makes the poison”.

Anything which is way beyond our need is a poison in itself, may it be food, love, hate or something like technology. The advancements which surround the current generation cannot be controlled however the use of these can.

1. Self Awareness:
It is possible if people become self-aware of the fact that being on screen too often not only disrupts their sleeping patterns but also affects their overall health along with their personality.

2. Acknowledgement of Predecessors:

It becomes a reality only if the predecessors belonging to previous generations acknowledge their responsibility and give up their criticism for the sake of a better future.

3. Guidance:

It is now the duty of previous generations to come up with suitable ideas of how to make this generation a smarter one by proper guidance instead of allowing them to do what they want to do which leads them to be a dumber one.

Technology is Today’s Necessity

2.png

It is the need of time to remain updated about each advancing technology. A person who knows well about it would obviously outsmart the one who has no prior knowledge of it at all but increased dependence on technologies is highly dangerous. No doubt they provide efficient means of performing tasks but they still have certain drawbacks. There is no surety about when and where they would break. The simplest example could be loss of data due to malware or cyber security breach due to hackers. With respect to such reasons, US Navy has initiated to train their officers about how to use a sextant for navigation. It is indeed a very old method but still a reliable one in case of cyber attacks on GPS systems installed on their computers.

Digital Generation; Smarter or Dumber?

2.png

Nick Carr argues in his book “The Shallows” about how the Internet is making this generation less attentive and less intelligent. He talks about how the internet alters the critical thinking and imaginative abilities of people making them weak. The debate between whether this digital generation is smart or dumb depends on how this generation uses it. Humans are known to be the master of transformation; changing their life to have the best of each advancement in technologies. They are known for shaping wood into houses, thread into fabric and metal into electronics. Technology is just like any other raw material, it is up to us whether to use it to increase our smartness or to make us dumber.
2.png

Digitalization Has An Equal Potential To Increase Smartness or Dumbness

2.png

Answering this question is simple as this generation can be both but us being human have the choice to make as it is up to us.

Socrates states that “knowledge stored is not really knowledge at all”

which clearly means that if we think technology can make us smarter by just existing there then it’s a dumb concept. We have the access to its beneficial use but it benefits us only if we want it to. It can indeed help us to develop better cognitive abilities only if we don’t get caught in our inability of learning how to use it properly. It has equal power of making us smarter with more capabilities and productiveness and also the power of destroying us to be weaker and dumber. But it does not have the power to make us wiser, which is our own natural ability when it comes to its usage.
