Celebrating Eid with my family

Tell us, what it consists of?

As Muslims, of course there are several celebrations that we celebrate every year and almost all celebrations become memorable days for us Muslims. For Muslim celebrations it consists of religious holidays and other big days.

For religious holidays, including Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Eid al-Fitr, where Muslims celebrate the day of victory after a full month of starving, both eating and drinking from sunrise to sunset. Meanwhile, Eid al-Adha is where Muslims perform the pilgrimage and on that day the peak is to carry out the pilgrimage.

Other Muslim celebrations include welcoming the Hijri New Year, the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad SAW and several other big days that are always commemorated by Muslims around the world. On this occasion I just want to discuss about the celebration of Eid al-Fitr.

What is the meaning of this celebration for you?

The celebration of Eid al-Fitr for me has a great meaning, and maybe everyone feels or has the same meaning. For us Muslims, Eid al-Fitr is the day when we return to being holy. This means that after 1 month of holding back lust and hunger, then Eid al-Fitr is a day of victory after 1 month of holding back hunger and lust. Not only holding back hunger and lust, but also refraining from things that are forbidden.

My son wears new clothes on Eid

On Eid al-Fitr, all families will gather at their parents' homes, both those who live far and near. Those who live far from their parents will travel home and will gather with their family on this special day.

It is not surprising that the moment of Eid al-Fitr is the day you have been waiting for. Because other than where to gather with family, then that day is a day where everyone apologizes and enjoys the special food of Eid al-Fitr. Usually these special foods are only available on days like this and not on normal days.

How long have you been celebrating it?

I have been celebrating Eid al-Fitr since I was little. Because small children will crave this holiday moment, where they will get new clothes from their parents and get money from their relatives, therefore when they are small this moment is eagerly awaited.

Visiting relatives homes

And until I am alive I will continue to celebrate this moment, for moments like this only happen once a year and are not done every day. That's why I really look forward to this moment and other people will also look forward to the same thing as I've been waiting for.

How do you celebrate it?

I celebrate the celebration with great joy, because this moment does not come every day. Before Eid al-Fitr arrived, I made various preparations, whether it was cleaning the yard outside and inside the house. Not only that, every time I welcome Eid al-Fitr, I buy new clothes for my children, wife and myself, and that is part of our culture.

In addition, during the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, I visited the homes of my parents, relatives and close relatives. During the Covid-19 pandemic that hit Indonesia, the celebration of Eid al-Fitr was much different from before. Because we are not recommended by the local government to get involved or gather with crowds. Only then did we celebrate by making video calls with the family.

With whom do you share the joys of this celebration?

I share the joy of this moment especially with my wife and children as well as with my parents and relatives. Not only with family sharing happiness, I also share happiness with children whose parents have died and with poor people who are in my place.

Together with friends listening to Eid tausiah

Remembering children whose parents have died, it is fitting that I, who are around them, share their happiness with them. If I who are close to them do not share happiness, how is it possible that people who are far away from them will share happiness.
