Greetings everyone! I hope you're all in good health and high spirits. Today, I've brought an article to this community that was a bit challenging, yet interesting to write. So, friends, the topic is "Boys will be Boys", and I'm going to share my thoughts on it with you. Oh, and yes, I must mention that hearing this topic had appeared in the CSS exam as mentioned by @artist1111 really took me by surprise. Alright, let’s not waste any more time and jump right in.🙂

What is your personal interpretation of the phrase “boys will be boys”?

You've probably heard the saying "boys will be boys," right? It’s a common saying, but what does it really mean? Well, in my opinion, it suggests that sometimes we give boys a bit of a “pass” for their behavior and actions. We might say, “Well, they’re just boys, they’re bound to act like that.” 😎

But that doesn’t mean we should let them get away with everything. Instead, it means we should understand that boys have their own needs, desires, and feelings that shape their behavior.

For example, if a boy is playing football and ends up with a muddy shirt, we might say “boys will be boys”, suggesting that it’s normal for boys to play and get dirty. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

But if that same boy is bothering a girl, we can’t just brush it off with “boys will be boys”. That’s not okay and it needs to be addressed. That’s the difference. In my opinion, “boys will be boys” should be used to celebrate the joy, energy, and curiosity of boys - not to justify misbehavior or harm to others. We should celebrate their happiness, enthusiasm, and curiosity - but not excuse their mistakes or harm to others.

So when we say “boys will be boys”, it should mean that boys have the right to live, learn, play, and understand the world in their own way. They deserve their childhood, fun, and happiness - and this should be celebrated.

But when they do something wrong, we should explain to them why it’s not right and help them correct it. That’s my take on this phrase.

Do you have a positive or critical view of this saying? Can you explain why?

Now, you might be wondering if I have a positive or critical view of this saying. Well, it’s a bit of both. Let me explain.

On the positive side, when we say “boys will be boys”, there’s an acknowledgement of innocence and naivety. When we talk about boys, their energy, curiosity, and adventurous nature are all natural and something to be celebrated.

But if this phrase is misused as an excuse for inappropriate or harmful behavior - that’s where the problem lies. For instance, as I said earlier, if a boy is disrespecting a girl or resorting to physical violence and we just shrug it off with “boys will be boys” - that’s not okay.

That’s what pushes me towards the critical view. Because not only does it encourage incorrect behavior but it also reinforces harmful societal gender norms and expectations.

So, whenever we say “boys will be boys”, we should remember that the scope and meaning of this phrase should be clear. It’s fine for positive and innocent things but not for excusing negative and harmful behavior.

How do you think the perspective on this phrase might vary across different cultures?

As for how the perspective on this phrase might vary across different cultures - well each culture has its own rules and beliefs. And that’s what makes us all so unique and diverse.

The thing is, sayings like “boys will be boys” exist in every culture - but their meaning and impact can vary widely. In some cultures, this phrase is taken light-heartedly, while in others it’s seen as deeply rooted in societal norms.

But it’s important to remember that culture is always evolving. What we believe today might change tomorrow. So, I think it’s important to critically examine our culture and ask ourselves if this phrase is really beneficial for our society.

I trust that you enjoyed reading my article. 😊
