Over time, we have been hearing reports of violent acts within households, and most of the time, we heard of a husband beating up his wife. But is domestic violence about only beating up married mates? In this post, I will outline types of domestic violence, the importance of creating awareness of domestic violence in our environment, and my experience with domestic violence.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Domestic violence is a physical abuse which happens either in the community or at home. It is a situation in which someone exercises power in an abusive way over members of his household. For example, a husband exercises power in an abusive way over his wife, a father exercises power abusively over his children, and domestic violence often frightens the other party and brings injury to the person exercising this power.

Domestic violence occurs in many forms, we have Physical abuse in which the victim is being slapped, pinched, grabbed, and shoved. We also have sexual abuse in which the victim is being forced to have sex with, or attacking the sexual part of the body. We have emotional abuse which involves name calling and demeaning one's abilities, making someone have low self-esteem.
We have this and many more forms of domestic violence that affect people in society.

THREE(3) MAIN TYPES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

1. PHYSICAL ABUSE: This is the type of abuse that is highly recognized, it is a type of abuse that poses a threat to human life. In this type of domestic violence, a mate uses force wrongly in a Physical way, which mostly results in injury and death. It involves actions such as slapping. Kicking, stabbing, shooting, hair dragging, grabbing, shoving, punching. Pinching etc.

2. EMOTIONAL ABUSE: This is the type of abuse in which the victim is being blackmailed emotionally, It is the use of speech to make the victim feel bad, it aims to destroy the victim's self-worth, it is mostly common in relationships, it includes constant name calling, looking down on anything the victim is doing which makes the victim feel he or she is not worthy of anything. Regular insults, discrimination, humiliation, and criticism. It is a difficult form of abuse that people often think is easy to withstand.

3. SEXUAL ABUSE: This is the type of abuse in which someone is forcefully taken advantage of sexually. Raping a married mate and assaulting a married mate are examples of the sexual aspect of domestic violence; it also includes attacking the sexual organs of a mate, touching or having sex without the consent of a mate.

IMPORTANCE OF RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN THE SOCIETY

It is very important because raising awareness will help stop those violent people. It will also make the victim receive help and be saved from violent people.

The government has made a law that any person involved in domestic violence will pay a penalty, he will spend some time in jail, especially those that abuse women sexually. So with this type of law, creating awareness will help bring the person to judgment and save the victim, in essence removing such bad influence from the society.

REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCE WITH DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

I have witnessed a man beating up his wife because she attended a Christian meeting. So this man came to our place of worship and beat up the wife because he asked her not to attend Christian meetings, she couldn't stay back but kept on coming, so one day, this man came to our hall and waited for his wife outside the gate, when the meeting was over he attacked the wife, beat her up and injured her with a stone, before men could interrupt he had already injured her and fled.

Personally, that was a bad experience; it is just a Minor issue that could have been settled peacefully, not with violence,e because the wife did not stay back from attending the meetings; she kept coming all the time, which shows that it is not everything that needs to be settled violently.

Conclusively, Domestic violence is a physical abuse which happens either in the community or at home. It is a situation in which someone exercises power in an abusive way over another. Domestic violence can be physical, emotional, or sexual, and in my opinion, domestic should be highly prohibited. Victims of domestic violence should make use of the laws set by the government for abstinence from domestic violence to make the perpetrators pay for their sins, therefore refraining from such prohibited acts. And finally, the public should be sensitized to domestic violence, and the steps to take if one eventually becomes a victim.
