Yes, children needs a little amount of play to balance their study. I could remember one day my son was studying a very simple arithmetic, he had a song that could be used to learn it faster and better,but I told him not to use the song instead he should learn it jist that way. Did you know it took him hours to figure it out, then the next time I had to let him use the song and play while he studied. Children just prefers to play in the midst of everything, I think that way their brain connects faster.
