Steem greetings all the way from the motherland-Cameroon. I welcome you all on my blog as I share my entry to the challenge topic “Why Gender Equality is necessary”.
My analysis will focus on the guiding questions below 👇 and I hope you all find pleasure in reading through this masterpiece.
What does gender equality entail, and what are the advantages?
The debate about gender equality has been going on for years now and has equally brought up different schools of thoughts.
Some believe that gender equality means women equating with men while others think that gender equality means “…what a man can do, a woman can do even more better”. This has left the society in so much confusion as some women now challenged men to be equal to the task.
Notwithstanding, I think that gender equality means everyone has inalienable rights and responsibilities for all opportunities, irrespective of your sex, age, race, class, etc.
It is important that every society upholds moral values and respect the rights of all. This is important as it will help to prevent a particular sex from being subjugated to “…belonging to the kitchen”. It will help to prevent violence within the society.
Lastly, gender equality somehow foster development and peace within the society as everyone upholds moral values and respect the rights of each and everyone regardless of sex, age, race, etc.
Is gender equality crucial for all people, not just women?
Before I go into the question proper, permit me share my thoughts with an employee about gender equality. I told this employee that “…we have over-empowered women to the extent that they now use their power to violates men’s rights”.
True, gender equality should not only focus on fostering women’s rights but it should be fostering the rights of everyone including persons living with disabilities in the society.
Equality should not only limits to promoting women’s rights but focus on promoting the rights of everyone.
What are your thoughts on gender equality, specifically concerning the circumstances in your country?
The situation of gender equality in my country is complicated due to the many ethic groups with different traditional stereotypes that still subject women from having access to power and fully participate in the development of the community.
However, with the increased in the number of civil society organisations all fighting to promotes women’s rights, many of the traditional stereotypes has been abolished.
Most people now are aware of their rights and only the uneducated can still suffer violence. However, my thought about gender equality in my country is that everyone should be empowered and not just a particular sex (female). This is because I feel women have been over empowered to the extent that some women abused the power by violating men’s rights.
How to educate our children to understand this issue
It starts from home upbringing and we as parents play an important role in fostering gender inequality in the society. Imagine you have 3 kids (1 boy and 2 girls). You over empowered the boy and made him believe that because he is a man he is not supposed to do any house chores. You assigned house chores only to the girls because it’s their rule.
There is absolutely no way that boy child gonna grow up respecting women’s rights rather he might turned to be an abusive man towards women because you assigned gender roles to house chores. Stop assigning gender roles to house chores to your kids, allow them to freely work together wether girl or boy.
In summary, gender equality is a good course and can foster peaceful society but when promoted for the wrong reasons, it rather causes conflict. La desigualdad de género es un tema que suele ser muy polémico y, cuando se llega a ese extremo me entristece porque, jamás se le debió haber dado tarima a una rivalidad entre el hombre y la mujer porque, cada uno tiene elementos específicos que aportar para el desarrollo de nuestra sociedad y, así como uno no es más que otro, ambos son necesarios.

You have rightly stressed the need to foster gender equality amongst young children, there shouldn't be any form of inequality between them, the both gender has equal right to doing chores as you analysed. This is a good way to train up these children to suit into the society properly believing every human is equal. I truly enjoyed your article and success in the dynamics.

Exactly my friend, we all have inalienable rights, our inborn rights as women should not be taken away from us. Where your rights end is where another person's rights begin.
I agree with you that, as parents, we have a major role to play in influencing our children's attitudes and actions regarding gender equality. Assigning tasks at home based on gender can perpetuate inequality and lead to women's feelings of disadvantage. We have to handle it carefully.
