THE NECESSITY FOR GENDER EQUALITY

INTRODUCTION:
Gender equality has been an issue for public discourse which has attracted several opinions in virtually all parts of the world. It demands for equal rights and opportunities in politics, economic, education, and employment. Though the gender equality is gaining more support at various levels, the female advocacy for this gender equality seems to be more visible and loudest. Does this mean that the female folks are the ones been denied of some rights and opportunities various strata of the society? If yes, what could be the justifiable reasons for it?

On this same note of gender equality, is the male folks also, not been denied of some rights and opportunities? If also yes, could there be justifiable reasons for it?

Coming from these two perspectives lies the necessity for gender equality.This now prompts me to look into the questions raised by the host, as gender inequality cuts across both genders that is, the male and female folks.

WHAT IS GENDER EQUALITY?

Gender equality is not a matter of measurement in heights of the male and female folks. No no! It is beyond that! Gender equality canvases for equal access to rights, opportunities, and privileges in politics, economic, and education no matter the gender. It draws a balance on how both genders could access different socio-economic and political resources at different levels on equal bases.

ADVANTAGES OF GENDER EQUALITY

The advantages of gender equality includes but, not limited to the following:

• It promotes peace in the society as it reduces violence against a particular gender.

• It enhances economic growth.
  The world labor force encourages up to 72% labour participation for men and 42% for women. This is ensuring that the economic and employment gap between the genders are closed. More productivity would be achieved.

• Gender equality reduces poverty in the land

• Gender equality reduces gender based violence.

• It promotes a healthy and safe environment for all.

Gender equality is crucial for all people, not just women?

Yes! Gender equality is crucial for all people and not just women alone. In my introduction, I mentioned it that even men are also denied of some rights and opportunities. But is unfortunate that whenever gender equality is been mentioned, women are only considered.

In my country Nigeria, gender equality has also taken the center stage. But this campaign for gender equality is only focusing on women. In a press statement issued by the actionaid, during the women"s day celebration for the year 2024, and in collaboration with the international women's day with the theme Count Her In: accelerating gender equality through economic growth. Women advocated for more inclusiveness in economic participation. The report shows that Nigerian women accounts for 70% of the country's most severely poor.

The report also show that the women's labour participation rate is 56% and compares it with the 80% for the men.

The women keep pushing for a balance in economic participation saying that it would reduce poverty in the land.

HOW TO EDUCATE OUR CHILDREN ON GENDER EQUALITY

We can educate our children on gender education by means of the following:

• Including gender studies in our various education curriculum

• Not using gender offensive words

• Having open discussions on gender equality

• Providing equal access to rights and opportunities to children

• Having good gender equality exemplars

CONCLUSION

Gender inequality cuts across all societies hence, there is no full practice of gender equality especially in developing countries. Owing to increasing levels of poverty, more access to economic rights, politics and education should be accorded equally. This would go a long way to preventing gender based violence and gender based economic imbalances in our society.
