[PW#13] The Beauty Of a Peacock: Between Maintaining Stability or Accepting Diversity
Hello @ocd lovers..
Have you ever heard the story about penguins and peacocks? I got this story when I was in school. And because today I got the object of photography about the beauty of peacocks, the story that I asked earlier was still very relevant to complete this photo. Well, the story of penguins and peacocks is a story of leadership stability dealing with creativity in an organization. Although this story is only an illustration, there are many things we can learn later from this story. Please enjoy my photography and my writing.
Once upon a time, the penguins were asked to be leaders by the animals. In the early days of penguin leadership, they tended to be exclusive and try to uniform a lot of circumstances and thoughts. One day, the penguins agreed to wear black and white suits. The penguins thought that uniformity is a good example and would bring unity and eliminate many differences in the system. Luckily, the penguins did not give a prohibition for birds and other animals using other colours.
The time passed, the idea of uniformity and unity reaped some progress and success, so many animals wanted to imitate them and follow their style. The birds are also inspired to go forward, calls for imitating what the penguins are doing continue to be heard everywhere. Other animals learn the steps of the penguins and follow the examples of leading penguin styles.
One time, the penguins experienced deadlock and boredom, until they agreed to recruit peacocks and they succeed to invite peacocks to join with them. The main reason is that penguins very interested in peacock intelligence, peacocks have colorful solutions and always bring new ideas. Penguins hope peacock's ideas will make a solution to the impasse in penguin leadership. They also hoped that the peacock would follow their black and white suit as same as that they were wearing. The peacock does appear striking with many colors and very different from other animals, that is what impressed the penguins. They feel the peacock has the potential thing to become a true Penguin.
Initially, the penguins were very happy because the peacock was very creative and brought good results in the leadership of the penguins. Then other animals very like peacocks, more and more. However, the time went on, the penguins feel the position of the peacock is too special and too colorful. It's disturbed, the penguin's comfort zone very down and they didn't like this.
On the other hand, peacocks also hate the idea of penguins because they want to change it and always encourage it to follow their appearance and the law of the penguins. Finally, the harmonization between the penguin and the peacock collapsed and gave rise to like and dislike, the penguins did not like the peacock and the peacock did not like the penguins either. This condition disturbed the leadership stability of penguins, even the era of penguin leadership close to failure.
That's the story I explain briefly, but although briefly story, I hope we can learn for a moment from the illustrative story above. What is that?
That's the story about leadership on organizations. Every leader in the organization wants his leadership to be better. The leader doesn't want the uncommon for an organization then fall apart because leaders expect maximum results and try to keep people to follow it. The story above was indeed and just fiction, but in fact, we see a lot of things happening in organizations today as well as in the story earlier.
That's right, the penguins see that peacock's "creativity and innovation" can be seen as "a breath of fresh air" that often occurs in many organizations. Many "peacocks" are recruited because of their creativity. But then, the creativity as displayed by the peacock is actually retained for the sake of the adjustment of the leaders or is expected to be in accordance with the norm.
Penguins as leaders or peacocks as supporters are not compact, not fun and tend to be authoritarian. The existence of people like penguins and like peacocks in an organization will always be there. But it must be realized that to be a leader you must also be brave to accept differences from other people as well as peacocks that are expected to be not opportunistic and seems to only work alone.
True, if peacocks bring diversity and new ideas, but existing stability cannot be ignored. Penguins like to be the backbone of an organization, there needs to be knowledge and attitude to accept differences and will always be in an organization. Feel free to recruit other people to support you in the organization, but you must not only recruit, but you must also be prepared to face, accept and dare to give trust to others. Believe, as you learn to appreciate each other's differences, you will also be more willing to listen, more open to new ideas and more motivated to grow forward.
The peacocks also have many colours, between one feather and another feather will be different even though they are in the same body, but the differences and colours are actually able to work together in harmony and cause a sense of joy and satisfaction from people who see it. Just like in an organization, please show all things, express all your creativity, give all your abilities, but still respect differences, respect people's opinions, and cooperate with differences.

Such a lovely story my friend, and indeed a true leader will always strive to develop the different talents of people that he leads. They say that a true leader helps others to become leaders.
