Rather than threatening jobs, AI should work with human minds

in Project HOPE2 years ago

In September 2020, The Guardian published an opinion piece written by the program. The artificial intelligence, called GPT-3, is a large-scale language model developed by OpenAI, and in the caption of its machine-generated text, it posed a bold question: “This entire article was written by a robot. Scared already, man?"

Indeed, it is a scary time to be a professional writer. Earlier in 2020, Microsoft fired journalists to be replaced by typing AI. And as AI language models continue to improve, researchers say AI-generated text will soon be indistinguishable from the human-written text.

Specifically, I sought to understand what human writers expect from AI and where the boundaries lie when it comes to writing.

First, we showed the authors various speculative designs of futuristic AI authors. We then asked them to reflect on how co-writing with AI will change their practice and perception of writing.

Emotions and productivity

The hobbyists in the study reported finding joy in the writing process and referred to the act of writing as a "labor of love." When considering scenarios where the use of artificial intelligence would increase their productivity, hobbyists were not interested in using advanced writing technology if it replaced what it means to be a writer.

Writers have attributed three different kinds of emotional values to writing. Some authors wanted to claim ownership of the words they wrote, worried that co-writing with an AI meant the text wouldn't be considered entirely their own. Other authors attributed a sense of integrity to the act of writing, saying that using artificial intelligence would be "like cheating". Others just enjoyed the process of turning their ideas into words.

In contrast, for professional writers, writing was a means of living. They were willing to use AI authors and assign parts of their work to bot authors if it could make them more productive. Professional writers envisioned using AI as a ghostwriter who could turn their ideas into written pieces.

Some authors believed that AI would do a good job of simple writing tasks such as stylistic improvements, rewording, and proofreading. But they didn't have much faith in AI's abilities for creative writing tasks like planning the flow of a narrative and setting the backgrounds of key story characters.

When presented with other speculative scenarios, authors would only agree to submit written assignments when their confidence in the AI outweighed their own confidence.

Artificial intelligence is a new form of technology which is not just smart but even capable to manage bunch of things just by the command. I'm expecting that in next few years we are going to experience a better version of AI devices and all this is going to be easy for us.
