Stress in children

in Project HOPE2 years ago
All people feel and suffer from stress, this is an alert response that our body has to tell us that something is not right. In this sense, we must learn to live and manage stress, otherwise it can become the origin of serious diseases. Children do not escape to feel stress, they have their own situations that generate this state of alert in the body, however, the difference is that they do not know how to handle it and much less recognize the stressors, which is why we as adults must help them find ways to manage stress, even we ourselves must learn to recognize what generates stress in our children.

As far as stressors are concerned, we can find the following:

Family factors: These are all the elements, events and facts that affect the child's family nucleus. A tense environment due to a bad relationship between parents, a serious illness in the family, a sudden death and even the arrival of a new family member can generate stress in children.

Social factors: Bullying, lack of friends and social relationships, isolation, change of school, moving from one sector to another and even migration is a factor that generates stress in children. Overexposure to social networks, is a very negative factor that generates a lot of stress in children, always being on the networks, listening and reading all the news that affect the world can make children live in a constant state of stress that can become chronic.

Educational factors: Many times as parents, who want the best for our children, we force them to be always busy, that is, to comply with school, enroll them in courses, to do sports, but also to develop some talent, to learn everything in a short time, this is not bad at all, but we must try that the little ones have free leisure time for leisure and recreation, if we only fill them with activities where learning is an obligation that leaves them no time for anything else we can generate in them a lot of stress by always wanting to comply with everything.

Bio-psychological factors: In the case of children who have a special condition, whether it is a disease or illness, they develop high levels of stress because they often do not understand their own situation. The same happens in the cognitive and psychological aspects, when there is some difficulty in learning, when children have phobias and fears, there are situations that trigger a lot of stress in them.

All of these factors are just a summary of the many elements that can cause stress. In a recent review of the literature on childhood stress I came across some interesting articles that talk about positive stress and how we as parents can use it and teach our children to use it. Positive stress is that emotion or drive that children (and all people for that matter) feel that drives them to do things that are goals to be accomplished that generate excitement and satisfaction.
