Washington officially bans TikTok and WeChat ... and sets the date

The US Department of Commerce announced, Friday, that it will ban US commercial transactions with the Chinese-owned social media apps WeChat and TikTok, starting Sunday.

Under the US ban, two major mobile application stores run by Apple and Google will have to remove applications, and US companies are also prohibited from providing services through WeChat, such as transferring money within the United States, according to a Sky News Arabia correspondent in Washington.

The announcement comes at a time when President Donald Trump is expected to announce, on Friday, whether or not the government will approve a deal for "Oracle" to acquire a stake in "TikTok" and become a technical partner of the company in the United States.

The Associated Press quoted the US Secretary of Commerce, Wilbur Ross, as saying that the ban was "to combat China's malicious collection of personal data of American citizens."

The government had previously said that using and downloading "Tik Tok" for communication would not be a prohibited transaction, although messaging on the application "may be affected directly or indirectly" by the ban, and people who use it for messaging will not be subject to penalties.

Some security experts have raised concerns that BiteDance Limited, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, will maintain access to information on about 100 million US users of the application, creating a security risk.
