ISO Standards to deal with the Pandemic

There are more than three million organizations in the world that have implemented an ISO standard and even half of these have a Quality Management System implemented and certified.

It is important to emphasize that the ISO Standards have been used for many years by organizations all over the world.
Now, in view of the emergency caused by the pandemic, they can use them to continue with their activities, adapting and improving the processes and operations already in place.
In this sense, the ISO 22301, ISO 27001, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 standards provide guidelines that help in the current framework of the pandemic and the consequences it has caused to countless organizations.

ISO 22301: Business Continuity(BCM)


This standard was published in 2012, entitled "Safety of Society - Business Continuity Management Systems - Requirements".

It contemplates the guidelines to plan, elaborate, implement, execute, follow, evaluate and implement the continuous improvement of a Documented Management System, in order to prepare the organization to face and recover from unexpected events.

The standard represents a very useful tool, which allows through the development, implementation and management of a Continuity Plan.

According to ISO 22301, they have as a premise:

Greater emphasis on the definition of objectives, their monitoring through appropriate metrics (Kpi's).

Clear definition of management responsibilities.
Improved resource planning to ensure Business Continuity.

ISO 27001: Information Security Management System


The ISO 27001 Standard contemplates the requirements that make it possible to ensure the organization's information, by ensuring the confidentiality, integrity and availability of the information, systems, applications and other tools.
The premise of Standard 27001 is to protect organizations' information by implementing security management.
In the current moment where the world is going through one of the worst socio-economic crises in the history of humanity, the ISO 27001 Standards allow those organizations that use it to make it much easier to use telework as a tool to continue operating, due to that this standard contemplates the controls required for this tool.
Additionally, ISO 27001 also provides many advantages in relation to safeguarding the organization's information against potential threats and information risks, through the implementation of security protocols.
Finally, the ISO 27001 standard allows: Knowing the risks, Managing the risks and Minimizing the risks.

ISO 9001 Standard: Requirements Quality Management System



The ISO 9001 Standard establishes the requirements for the training of personnel in relation to the selection of suppliers and partners. In this sense, the usefulness of this standard is currently oriented in the analysis that allows us to determine the capacities and skills necessary to train personnel in relation to the use of the tools required to continue carrying out the operations of the organization.

As well as they provide us with the necessary requirements for the selection of suppliers and avoid the interruption of the supply chain to the organization

ISO 45001 Standard: Occupational Health and Safety System

The ISO 45001 Standard establishes the requirements for the establishment of an occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS), through certification of compliance with occupational health and safety laws and regulations, as well as the identification of risks. and establishing possible solutions.

This standard nowadays provides the organization with the tools required to identify the possible risks as well as the potential dangers to which they are exposed within the organization.

Additionally, it establishes the necessary guidelines to establish the controls required for care within the organization, thus avoiding the exposure of workers to contagion.

All of the aforementioned provides a safe environment for workers, which translates into greater harmony and confidence for the performance of their activities.

Reflections by way of Conclusion

The pandemic has forced organizations to establish a commitment to quality as the main and essential challenge for the continuity of their operations.

Likewise, quality is a vital factor for achieving customer satisfaction, as well as that of employees and managers, providing you with the necessary tools to achieve success.

Finally, today many managers and owners of organizations that did not take quality into account, have changed their points of view by viewing it as an alternative to continue with the operations of their organizations.

Surely ISO helps for a better quality of life for a common man--by standardizing products and services--more kind of a bridge-builders between a common man and the companies.

Rules are important in everything we do in our lives, otherwise I think the world would be in chaos. Fortunately, teleworking was allowed to advance as it has today, as it has helped many people to keep their jobs and their homes.

It is good to implement ISO 27001 as ISO refers to the International Organization for Standardization. It is an international standard on how to manage information security.

ISO 27001 was developed to help organizations, of any size or any industry, to protect their information in a systematic and cost-effective way, through the adoption of an Information Security Management System (ISMS).

ISO 27001 is the accepted global benchmark for the effective management of information assets. It enables organisations to avoid the costly penalties associated with non-compliance with data protection requirements and the financial losses resulting from data breaches.

ISO 27001 la certification can be done when you have at least four years of experience in process management and Quality management , of which at least two years on a job related to information security.

I want to add some more benefit points which are as follow :

You will Learn Leadership responsibilities.
You will be able to Learn how to perform Internal ISMS audits.
Become Master in ISMS improvement techniques.
You will Control objectives and controls in the organisation.
Perform Audit Planning.
Handle Audit Interviews.

Due to this pandemic there is need an hour to have ISO 27001 certification.
Some organisations don’t even select their IT partners who do not have ISO 27001 implementation in their organizations. When it comes to government’s data related contracts, this becomes a requirement.
