Increase your vocabulary and communicate bettersteemCreated with Sketch.

"Knowledge is power and in communication, the more we know, the more power we have to argue, illustrate, inform, move or convince. "

One of the most effective ways to improve our written, interpersonal and oral communication is to increase our vocabulary. Entrepreneurs, stay and enjoy this lesson on how to communicate better that we are going to develop in this post.

The more words we have stored in our memory, the better able we will be to express ourselves correctly and effectively. It is not the same to say: "Give me to call this gentleman who sells these gringo cleaning products " to saying: Let me have the phone number to call the man who contacted us a few days ago offering imported cleaning products ". Or maybe: "That logo is very ugly and does not fit with anything in the business " to saying: "In my opinion, that logo does not convey the values, purpose and essence of our business".

If we're talking about emotions, nothing beats the super-generic "bad" and "good."

  • How do you feel right now?
  • "Fine. All good".

Why not use other words to describe how we feel?

. How do you feel right now?
. "I feel relaxed, but I'm still wondering how he'll react when he sees me here".

How to increase our vocabulary and general culture?

🗣️ The best way we have to increase our vocabulary is to read. And the more varied our reading, the better. This way we learn terms, concepts, foreign words, slang and various professional jargon. This increases our general culture and lexicon, bringing as a consequence the development of our creativity, increased resources and diversity of options to describe, narrate or detail what we want to say.

🗣️ Something additional we can do in our daily life to increase our vocabulary and general culture is to read the news. Keep up to date with regional, national and world events. Read news, internet articles or watch videos on some social network about something current..

🗣️ Don't settle for the news. Look for additional information and read other versions or other newspapers. It is important to know several points of view about the same topic. Look for information about that thing you just saw, especially if it's something new to you..

🗣️ Read or listen about world history, biographies, inventions, discoveries about archeology, medicine or technology.

🗣️ I like to be up-to-date (I'm a hopeless gossip). But I also like to know the origin of everything, the story behind that singer in the controversial video, the context of that speech on euthanasia that the president of Singapore gave at the UN.

I hate to be left in the dark. I don't expect you to do what I do, sometimes I waste a lot of time on that. But I do encourage you to be more curious, inquisitive and intellectually restless. When you are writing next time, whether it is a poem, a reflection or a text message, it is likely that what you read three days ago will help you a lot.

It will also help us when expressing our ideas, thoughts and feelings with our work colleagues, investors, clients or perhaps responding to a comment on our social networks. Not to mention the power it will give to our ability to improvise when writing, conversing or giving a sales or customer service pitch.

In a future post I will show you other ways to increase our vocabulary using a dictionary and I will leave some exercises for you to practice and share with us your progress. Stay tuned for my next posts.
