Coronavirus - why community is more important now than ever

Coronavirus

The spread of Coronavirus has taken the world by shock as it has spread so quickly and turned so many peoples' lives upside down. Health services in many countries are struggling to cope and things are going to get worse.

The Washington Post has created a number of simulations that show how the virus spreads and how different measures can control the spread. The simulations show how forced isolation and social distancing can slow the spread of the virus. The idea is that if different countries can slow the virus and it impacts us over a longer period of time, the pressure will be less on the health services and hopefully, therefore, we can reduce the overall impact by not running out of vital life-saving care.

The Telegraph discusses why containment has worked better in Asia. Largely because they have seen this before with Sars and are better rehearsed to know what to do. There is less panic in Asian society and more controlled isolation.

Community Matters

If we can successfully slow down the virus, then that means we are going to be in this situation for a longer time. When we see panic buying it is often the poorest people in society who lose out. They are not able to bulk buy as they are surviving from day-to-day. Foodbanks are already running out of some stocks putting further pressure on the poor.

The old are also going to suffering and with some countries asking the old to self-isolate for long periods, we will find things get very difficult.

So please, this is where community can really make a difference. Think about the poor and see how you can assist them. Think about your elderly neighbours and how you can help them. Think about those who are around you and suffering and show them how compassionate the human spirit can be.

Sort:

Yes we should all keep aside our differences and internal conflicts and focus on saving the humanity in this crisis days. Its humans versus the virus.

Fingers crossed. Vaccines will be available in a few months hopefully, if not a year. 😟

HI @nirmal

Yes, let's bring out the best in humanity.

I think the vaccine will take at least a year as it takes time to do clinical trials. There is no shortcutting that at the moment. So we need to stay strong and united!

Yup you are absolutely right.

This covid-19 is getting everyone panic hope there is a cure soon

I hope so too. However, I think in reality it is some way from that, possibly 1 year still. We are learning every day though and no one really knows where this will end. Let's hope for some breakthroughs that help save lives.

hi @awah

Even if there is a cure. Who should receive it? How can anyone know who is already infected (just without symptoms)? Would we inject those vaccines to entire population? Will we know what are long term effects of those vaccinations? Or will we all be a test subject?

I wonder

I assume that vaccine companies have a solid process for going through with clinical trials. There is always a risk of side effects from any vaccine but we do create flu vaccines every year and the process is similar. We also have good knowledge of the virus. It took 2 days to understand the genetic code of this virus compared to 2 years for the HIV virus.

I hope when there is a vaccine, world governments come together and do the right thing and ensure that old and vulnerable of society are the first ones to have access. Regardless of their country, race, beliefs.

However, the acitons of Trump don't give me great hope for that. He is already trying to buy out any vaccine so it is just for the US. Some people aren't fit to lead.

Dear @awah

This virus indeed turned many peoples lifes upside down. However the worst is yet to come. I would expect that within 2-3 months wave of people being fired from their jobs and companies closing down will boom.

The idea is that if different countries can slow the virus and it impacts us over a longer period of time, the pressure will be less on the health services and hopefully, therefore, we can reduce the overall impact by not running out of vital life-saving care.

That surely make sense.

I wonder how long it will take before all those doctor and nurses will start breaking down mentally. Amount of pain and sadness they will experience in upcoming weeks can be devastating. Seriously those people are HEROs.

So please, this is where community can really make a difference. Think about the poor and see how you can assist them

I'm personally waiting for full body protective suit (which will hopefully come in this week) and I'm planning helping (once a week) to few of my neighbours (old people mostly) to get food and water supplies. And on daily basis I will tell them that if they need to throw rubbish into the bin - then I will ask them to leave this trash in front of their door and I will check all floors once a day.

Hope I'm not going to risk my own life. But I will do my best to protect myself and spray with 70% alcohol all suit whenever I'm back from shopping.

Have a great monday buddy,
Yours, Piotr

That is a beautiful plan you have buddy, please be careful.

I like the fact that you have reasoned towards a different direction, the poor and less privilege are the ones who suffer every outbreak, we only need cooperation to save ourselves from further destruction. I wish you the best

Too right - let's not forget about the poor, vulnerable and the at risk. Stay safe buddy.

Dear @awah, i am fucking angry because only now we understood what is this virus, not like chinese says...

There is so little knowledge of what this virus really is. The statistics are all near useless as they are all different in the way people are tested and the truth the governments will tell us.

What we do know, is it is fundamentally going to change our lives for a long time. It will be incredibly hard for so many people around the world.

Thanks for stopping by and commenting. Stay safe.
