An Introduction to MemeFactory [ETH | Hive | DAO | The Future of Work]

in OCD5 years ago (edited)

This portrait is one that I painted tonight for the Community Manager of Memefactory -- Brady Mckenna and his Wife.

The actual portrait to celebrate their marriage does not have Deal With It Glasses or a Thug Life Joint, but Meme Factory has that kind of sense of humor, so I went with it. [I'm actually not certain if she smokes pot or not, but I know Brady is fond of the Deal With It Glasses.]

For those of you who are not familiar with Memefactory, it is the most idealistic iteration of NFT Artwork available in the Ethereum Ecosystem at present.

I've had extensive conversations with Brady via their Discord Channel -- and if you all here would like some cross cultural discussions about exactly where the lines between [DAOs] | [Hives] [Communities] [Art Collectives] [Project Incubators] exist -- and what the future of work might look like within a larger cryptocurrency context -- I would highly suggest you go speak with him.

There are a number of interesting idealistic things that Memefactory is doing, which I think they ought to be commended for:

  1. They are the first token curated registry of their kind. Meaning in order to get memes onto the marketplace, you need to pass a community curation vote. [Decentralized.]

  2. They don't take a cut of anything. When they launch the District0x registry, it will be up to the stakeholders to initiate a vote to allocate a percentage to District0x -- which I find to be an impressive commitment to idealism.

  3. They have linked up their marketplace with Opensea.io -- which, while not unique, is indicating the sort of freedom and interoperability that ought to be present within the ecosystem.

  4. NSFW Artwork was not initially in consideration on the platform, and since I showed up to the scene, they ended up installing a opt-in button when browsing the marketplace. -- Which I thought was generous, and very cool.

I realize that we've got some NFTs that were just launched here on Steem, as well as a SteemLeo Shop, and I look forward to exploring those.

I think the reason for this post is primarily an introduction of Brady and Memefactory to some of you here on Steem -- with the hope that a handful of you more serious steemians, or perhaps the NFT crowd [@aggroed] -- reach out to him on discord and have a brief conversation.

I personally think there is a lot of potential for Hives to become semi-permeable DAOs // art collectives. I also personally would like to see some cross pollination between the ETH community and the STEEM community.

Steem is doing a social network for sharing and curating original content extraordinarily well -- and ETH is an undisputed leading force in the decentralized economy. [Coinmarketcap]

I've brought this up to some people who are operating within the ETH ecosystem, and their response is that ETH ought to get their own Steemit. Vitalik has even made comments like this being a good idea.

Having spent some time on Steemit for about 2 months now, It seems like there's a good thing happening here. Maybe it would be advantageous to dismiss some of that Tribalism and figure out a better way of working together [Steemit and the Ethereum Ecosystem.]

.:.

An immediate example that comes to mind for artists would be a graphic novel anthology -- forgive my being limited to my own wheelhouse:

  • Daily Project Updates on Steemit [Funding in STEEM and contribution of original content to community for curation.]
  • Participation / Collaboration within Hives [Exhibitionistic Community Interaction / Co-Operative OC creation.]
  • NFTs [Funding in Steem and ETH]
  • SteemLeo Shop [Funding in Steem]
  • Cryptovoxels Gallery Project Promotion [Funding In ETH and VR outreach in ETH]
  • Patreon [USD Crowdfunding Monthly]
  • Kickstarter [Project based Campaign Crowdfunding USD]
  • Youtube Channel Aggregate -- formed by collaborative participation within a hive of multiple graphic novel creators / artists. [Youtube Google Adsense USD Funding]
  • Social Media Twitter Aggregate [POSH]
  • Colony.io DAO formation for decentralized Guild Bank in ETH

That's an outstanding number of potential advantages in order to incubate large scale projects or anthologies.

Frankly it surprises me that it doesn't exist yet.

I know that the curation communities like OCD and Palnet and CreativeCoin are crucial elements to the functioning of this sort of theoretical structure.

And there are likely parts of Steemit that I don't understand yet, that would also fit into the puzzle.

.:.

I'll just say that I would be interested in having conversations like this with people here in Steem, and that this is the main reason why I created Hierophant DAO.

It just seems to me like the potential to leverage multi-platformed crowdfunding enables access to the creation of large scale commercial projects that otherwise would have been out of reach for most amateur creators.

Hopefully someone will have something interesting to contribute or educate me with in the comments, or if you want to go talk with someone who has a solid idea about what is happening with this sort of thing within the Ethereum Ecosystem, you go to the Memefactory Discord Server, and chat with Brady.

EDIT:
As another note -- onboarding for ETH is one of the most difficult issues, because it requires artists to use the KYC on Coinbase or some other Exchange in order to obtain ETH. Onboarding to Steem instead, and then posting content, and then transferring steem out into ETH via the native exchange linked to the platform is a way of obtaining the ETH necessary to pay the gas prices needed to submit NFTs in on Memefactory.io.

Just another example of another way that the platforms can benefit one another.

ETH artists can onboard to Steem, and Non-ETH artists who want to get into crypto-art, can ease onboarding avoidance by joining up on Steemit first, and then expanding outward into other ecosystems.

Pretty cool.

Have a good night.
