Reduce greenhouse gases by promoting rooftop gardening

Rooftop gardening is becoming popular day by day in our urban life. It is mostly effective in urban areas. I published a post regarding rooftop gardening few days back which you will find here. In that writing I described about some general topics about rooftop gardening. Today’s post will be more specific and discussion point will be the benefits of rooftop gardening. Though the subject mentioned about reduction of greenhouse gases by promoting rooftop gardening, it will not be limited to that only. We will find some other benefits of rooftop gardening as well. Throughout this post I will be providing some pictures from my rooftop garden for reference.

We are running short of land everyday to construct new buildings. It is mostly happening in urban areas. Though the urban citizens love gardening, they don’t have sufficient land to do this. The concept of rooftop gardening has opened a door for them. There are some significant benefits of rooftop gardening which might attract the people to initiate the rooftop gardening.

In this post I will try to highlight some benefits of rooftop gardening for city dwellers.

Here are the benefits-

A rooftop garden could reduce greenhouse gases: A city is more polluted than a village. Industrialisation mainly take place in urban areas which produce a lot of greenhouse gases. Also the number of motorised vehicle are high in city. As a result, the environment of urban areas are getting polluted everyday. Specially, the greenhouse gases from mills, industries, vehicles, ACs and refrigerators are destroying the ozone layer. Due to this our earth are getting warmer everyday. The ice are melting and sea level are rising. This is a threat to our environment.

The plants and trees can absorb CO2 and release Oxygen. If we do more rooftop gardening, it will absorb the greenhouse gases and save our world. So, we should do more and more planting.

Rooftop garden works as heat resistant: A rooftop garden can protect your building from heat. If you do rooftop gardening, it will create shade in your roofs automatically and will not allow to generate heat. Consequently, the consumption of electricity will be less. You might not need to run AC or electric fans like before. As a result, it could be big savings for you.

Rooftop garden can reduce water-logging: Crowded city like Dhaka suffers from water logging every year during rainy season. Sometimes the rain water overflow due to excessive rain. If we do rooftop gardening, it will block some water. As plants and trees require water to grow, less water will be dispatched from buildings. If it works for every building of the city, water logging will definitely be reduced.

Rooftop garden can give you fresh and chemical free vegetables and fruits: The fruits and vegetables which we are getting from market are contaminated sometimes due to excessive use of chemicals and pesticides. If we use organic fertiliser to grow our garden, we will get hazard free output.

Space reduction: If you have less space in your rooftop, you can do vertical gardening. It will definitely serve your purpose.

Beautification: Not only a rooftop garden is the source of fruits and vegetables but also it enhances the beautification of your roof. You can plant different beautiful flowers and enjoy the beauty of it. In the morning or evening whenever you go to your rooftop, the flowers and plants will soothe your eyes. It will also refresh your body and mind.

I have read in Wikipedia that in Japan they are emphasising on rooftop gardening. In a survey it was proven that rooftop gardening can reduce approximately 0.6-0.8 degree Celsius temperature. This is much effective method to reduce the heat of the urban area.

Last but not the least, rooftop gardening is a good technique to save our environment. It could also be a good source of income for the individuals. Every government should support the people to do rooftop gardening by providing new technology.
