Feathered Friday - BIRDS IN THE BAY...AND ALL AROUND TOWN

in OCD5 years ago (edited)

The great white egret (Ardea alba) ...
DSC05541 malo.jpg
... is searching for fish ...
(Enlargeable)
... is a pretty big bird ... but it looks small in this large shallow bay ...
(Enlargeable)
... here in Medulin ... my hometown ...
DSC02696 malo.jpg
... not far from there, on the shore ... the domestic pigeon is pecking some seafood delicacy uncovered by the low tide ...
DSC07100 malo.jpg
... a hundred or so meters further, in the park near the port ... the female Common blackbird (Turdus merula)... which is not very black ... is enjoying the juicy earthworm ... it was raining recently ... the soil is soft and humid, the earthworms are very active near the surface and is a great feeding time for blackbirds ...
DSC00770 malo.jpg
... once, early in the morning ... also just after the rain ...
DSC00771 malo.jpg
... and also in that area ... but not on the grass ... on the shiny, wet asphalt instead ... in the middle of the street that runs along the park ... and the port ... I saw a Hooded crow (Corvus cornix) ... which is not unusual ... along the Seagulls, these crows are the most common and numerous birds here ... but this particular crow caught my attention because she was observing and studying a walnut ...
DSC00772 malo.jpg
... then she started to throw the walnut to smash it on the asphalt ... on this photograph, you can see that the nut is in the air by the position of its shadow ...the crow did it just a few times ... soon realized that this method won't work ... and then ...
DSC00773 malo.jpg
... took the walnut in the beak ... and flew ...
DSC00774 malo.jpg
... but not far ... the crow just flew high enough above the same area and threw the walnut ... and this time it was a success ... on this photograph you can see the crow with the walnut broken in two halves ...
DSC00775 malo.jpg
... the crow looked really satisfied ... and kind of proud ...
DSC00777 malo.jpg
... and it was a great moment for me too ...
DSC00779 malo.jpg
... because I really like to observe and photograph situations and behaviors like this ...
DSC00780 malo.jpg
... and while the crow was consuming the prize of her inventiveness ...
DSC00781 malo.jpg
... in small chunks ...
DSC00783 malo.jpg
... a magpie, or more precisely the Eurasian magpie (Pica pica) ... was sniffing around in hope to get a piece of the meal ...
DSC06163 malo.jpg
... on a sunny summer afternoon on this photograph ... and on the opposite end of town ... where the last houses meet the agricultural fields, the vineyards and the olive orchards ...
DSC06163 MIKROKROP.jpg
... the lovely Red - legged partridge (Alectoris rufa) male ... is surveying his territory from a stone pedestal ...
DSC08273 malo.jpg
... also in these fields ... I caught a glimpse of this Eurasian dotterel (Charadrius morinellus)... that was well camouflaged on this earthy background ... this is a migratory species ... that is not often seen here ...
DSC05766 malo.jpg
... on the tall weeds that borders the fields ... the male of the Lesser short - toed lark (Calandrella rufescens) is singing ...
DSC03956 samoMALO.jpg
... and on one of the meadows there ... a group of Guineafowls is looking who is coming ... they are here like chickens :) definitely domestic birds ... but when you see them in the tall grass ... :) looks a bit like a wildlife scene ...
DSC09374 malo.jpg
... on this photograph we are back on the street ... back on the town's asphalt ... where three little birds are enjoying the bath in a small pool of water ...
DSC09380 samo malo.jpg
... another small bird that is here for the bath ... this one really tiny ... The goldcrest (Regulus regulus) ...
DSC01154 samo malo.jpg
... in another similar pool ... and on this really ultra low quality shot taken long ago with some really simple little camera ...
DSC01153 samoMALO.jpg
... a male blackbird ... black as chimney sweeper ... is doing his bath ... all this old shots around the pool are definitely not a good photography examples ... but I kind of like them ... and I think they convey enough to tell the story, so I hope :) it was a good decision to put them here ...
DSC04687 malo.jpg
... and since I mentioned the chimney sweeper ... and I like chimneys ... I thought - let's put a chimney in the post ... and so here is the chimney ... the rising moon above it ... and a seagull is passing by - connecting this picture to the rest of the post ... and then, on the following picture ...
DSC05970 malo.jpg
... the same seagull ...The yellow - legged gull (Larus michahellis) is resting on the same chimney ... in my neighborhood ...
DSC03264 samo MALO.jpg
... on this shot ... also in my neighborhood ... but the chimney is not the same ... although looks pretty similar ... is a less common visitor - the Eurasian sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) ...
sjenice1 malo.jpg
... and since we are in my neighborhood ... my house is not far from here ... let's take a look through my kitchen window :) ... I photographed this lovely Eurasian blue tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) through the glass ... this is also made with a low quality camera some years ago ... but since was at close distance, the shots look relatively decent ...
sjenice2 malo.jpg
... the bird was pecking something on my plum tree that grows near the window ...
DSC07805 malo.jpg
... since we are at my place ... here is a shot from my garden ... The Eurasian jay (Garrulus glandarius) resting on my fig tree ...
P1740035 samoMALO.jpg
... and here is another shot from my neighborhood ... there is a little traffic circle near my house ... with an olive tree in its center ... on that olive tree I photographed this European greenfinch(Chloris chloris) ...
DSC02395 malo.jpg
... this photograph was taken somewhere around the town ... seagull is talking to a piece of bread :D ...
DSC02397 malo.jpg
... and then the usual magpie enters the scene ... to sniff around a bit ...
DSC02061 malo.jpg
... on this picture ... also taken somewhere around the town ... is a lovely circle of magpies ... looks a bit like some ritual dance is going on ...
IMG_7705 malo.jpg
... here is the Red - rumped swallow (Cecropis daurica) ... resting somewhere high on the wire ...
DSC02524 samoMALO.jpg
... here are some hooded crows ... kind of strategically ... and photogenically ... arranged on the winter trees ...
DSC03316 malo.jpg
... on this photograph - some very ordinary domestic pigeons ...
DSC03317 malo.jpg
... in free flight above Medulin ... and on the following photograph ...
DSC03542 malo.jpg
... is just a parked car :D ... seemingly ... but if you take a better look ... you'll notice a little bird on the rear - view mirror ... ... looks a bit like the part of design ... it goes very harmonically along with the lines and colors of the car ... almost like some kind of mimicry :D ...
DSC03542 MIKROKROP.jpg
... this is the White wagtail (Motacilla alba) ... a very common ... and very lovely bird ...
DSC06183 malo.jpg
... on this photograph is the Grey heron (Ardea cinerea) ... on the big old oak tree in my friend's garden ...
DSC06212 malo.jpg
... and now - back to the bay ...here is a bunch of European shags - a cormorant species ( Phalacrocorax aristotelis ) in the summer morning ...
DSC06226 malo.jpg
... on this shot some of those cormorant are swimming towards ... I don't know ... somewhere ... I'm a bit exhausted right now ... this post takes too long to finish ... thought it will be easier ...
DSC01091 malo.jpg
... here are some young seagulls on some makeshift platform in the port ... this was in autumn ...
DSC01088 malo.jpg
... and here is one of those cormorants too ...
DSC01093 malo.jpg
... seagulls again ... and the cormorant is swimming away ...
DSC02004 malo.jpg
... a little grebe is also swimming through the post ... and I don't know the exact species ...
P1810145 samoMALO.jpg
... another seagull ... but this is a smaller species ... Mediterranean gull (Ichthyaetus melanocephalus) ...
P1810144 malo.jpg
... a small seagull in the large bay ...
DSC07887 malo.jpg
... this little bird ...
DSC07887 MIKROKROP.jpg
... must be one of the sandpiper species ... I think ...
P1900021 samoMALO.jpg
... and this is the Eurasian curlew (Numenius arquata) ...
P1890154 samoMALO.jpg
... on this low quality - digital zoom shot ... you can see him in the same place ... but when the tide is less high ... the bird is using the leg to find or drive out its prey from the mud ...
P1890168 samoMALO.jpg
... here the tide is really low ... and you can see how he uses his beak ...
P1890169 samoMALO.jpg
... here he got something ... hurrah ...
P1890195 samoMALO.jpg
... here the European curlew is walking through the mud and the seagull is observing ...
P1890198 samoMALO.jpg
... here the curlew is still passing by ... and the seagull is still observing ...
DSC02216 malo.jpg
... here are some Little egrets (Egretta garzetta) ... and a Mediterranean gull ... on a windy winter day ...
DSC02214 malo.jpg
... here is just one of those egrets ...
DSC01197 malo.jpg
... here are also some egrets and a seagull ...
DSC01201 malo.jpg
... but on a calm autumn morning ...
DSC00712 malo.jpg
... and these are the Common coots ...
(Enlargeable)
... swimming in front of some relatively new apartment buildings ...
DSC09093 malo.jpg
... this is a Grey heron again ... on a rainy day ... you can see jumping droplets all around the bird ... is a low quality shot ... but there is a bit of poetic atmosphere in this rain ... so I like it ... enough ... to put it in the post ...
DSC09097 malo.jpg
... here is a wider look with a small boat in the background ...
DSC09099 malo.jpg
... and here is the Grey heron, the Little egret, and the Mediterranean gull - all together ... what a lovely bunch :D ...DSC06620 malo.jpg
... and now ... with this closing shot of a seagull sailing away like a little paper boat ... or something like that ... is time to end this feathered post - THE END ... P.S. As always in these posts on Steemit, all the photographs are my work.

Absolutely amazing post and fantastic photography! There were so many birds here that I have never seen. I love the story about the smart crow and loved how you captured his movements to get the walnut open. I really enjoyed all of these photos.
