I deem it a great pleasure to be given this opportunity to write on content etiquette.

What is the situation of a student caught in an act of examination malpractice? And what will be the condition of a child when he is caught red-handed stealing meat from a pot of soup?
These cases are normally dealt with all seriousness and are regarded as bad practices in our societies. It mostly hurts when someone steals your idea and presents it as his or hers.

Plagiarism is copying of another person’s idea, text or other creative work and presenting it as one’s own, especially without permission. Videos, songs, stories, images, among others are usually plagiarized.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

Verbatim Plagiarizing:
It is the direct word-for-word copying of a part of another person’s work without quotation marks or giving that person credit. This is an act that should be avoided at all cost and anyone who is found guilty should be dealt with accordingly.

Paraphrasing Plagiarism
This is the most common form of plagiarism. It is the rephrasing part of a text in one’s own words without citation.
Paraphrasing isn't plagiarism if its sources are cited nicely. However, paraphrasing becomes plagiarism once it is being written from a source without citing its source.

Mosaic Plagiarism
Mosaic plagiarism means copying phrases, passages, and concepts from different sources and putting them together to make a substituting text.

Global plagiarism
It refers to the act of presenting an entire content or work of another person without attributing the original author. This is the most serious type of plagiarism. It can lead imprisonment and hence should be avoided.

Self-Plagiarism
This is reusing of a person’s own words from previously published work. It is better and safe to thoroughly cite previous work.

EFFECTS OF PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is an act that is not generally accepted and so culprits are dealt with accordingly. Below are some of the consequences of plagiarism,

1. An individual can be sacked from school because of plagiarism.
2. Plagiarism can lead to loss of position or job.
3. Plagiarism can result in legal action and penalties against the individual.
4. It can damage one’s reputation in society.
5. Can lead to reduction of marks or rejection of work.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM
It is very important and safe to avoid plagiarism at all cost as this has many effects as stated above. Below are some ways of avoiding plagiarism.
• By citing sources properly, one can avoid plagiarism.
• The best way is to present one’s own thoughts and ideas nicely.
• One can avoid plagiarism by using quotation marks
• Good paraphrasing can also help.

CITATION AND ITS TYPES
Citation can be defined simply as the reference of the location (source) of the information used in one’s work.
It is very important as it prevents plagiarism, gives credibility to one’s work and provide more details to the reader.
