Voting on steemit is simply a way of publicizing an opinion towards a persons work or post, this opinion could be negative or positive. When negative, this is indicated by a downvote but when positive, its indicated by an upvote.
But wait there is a catch
Every vote takes up a users voting energy which is called "Voting Mana". This starts up at a maximum of 100% and decreases per vote. The lower the voting mana the weaker your voting strength and effect on a post gets. The steemit system automatically restores 20% of exhausted mana per day, just to keep you on track.
CURATION IN THE STEEMIT SYSTEM
Curation in the steemit system means to upvote a post, meaning an upvoter is "A Curator". A curator is mostly entitled to 50% of the reward allocated by his vote.

To earn and grow better, its advisable to join a community that supports "Curation trail". This helps community members by mass curation with only one member needing to curate.
What happened if you vote a post before 5 minutes mark after posting?
The 50% reward a curator gets from a post will be reduced due to the fact that the vote was made before 5 minutes elapsed. The reduction from a curators 50% reward varies due to time,
