In the world of academics, film making, writings, literature and other art works both in the internet and in the real world, writers, producers and even publishers are invariably found quilty of appropriating and pirating the inventions and other written works of rightful owners all in the name of making ends meet. In order to avert this situation and to help rightful owners enjoy the ownership of their efforts; piece, writings, inventions or art works; authorities, governments and institutions all the world over have come up with copyright laws which give or offer an exclusive legal right for owners to produce, reproduce, publish, sell as well as distribute their piece of work such as, music, recordings, literature and other inventions as the case may be.

For this reason, any violator, person or group of persons found guilty of this copyright laws all over the world is unavoidably punishable either by serious fines or jail terms according to the severity of the copyright offence committed by the said individual, violator or the violators in question. Of course, publishing firms, industries, companies, institutions and governments both in the internet and the real world all over the world frawn at individuals who are fond of violating these copyright laws by way of plagiarizing the contents and works of others. In the like manner, the Steemit Platform also punish users who plagiarize other peoples' contents whereby muting the defaulters' Steemit accounts and disallowing them in participating in the Steemit crypto academy.

This amongst other reasons why this great platform: Steemit Platform deemed it fit in educating her users what plagiarism is all about and its effects on writings through the concept 'content etiquette' in achievement 3 in her newcomers' community. This is because, the Steemit Platform delights in proof- of - brain, i. e creative writing on the part of its users. In addition, Steemit platform is based on writings and creativity to enhance self-dependent on the part of the Steemians.
However, content in a lay man's language could be used to mean what is contained in a piece of writing, document, and/or journal etc.

According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, content refers to the topic or matter treated in a written work... It is the principal form or a substance as a written work, art, matter, or any illustrated works etc. source

"Etiquette on the other hand refers to the conduct or procedure required by good breeding or prescribed by authority to be observed in social or official life."- Merriam Webster Dictionary. source

Therefore, 'content etiquette' in the Steemit context or environment is a rule that is put in place in the platform to guide against plagiarism by users. Of course, it is to protect individual users' creative contents, words, ideas and/or piece of writing against plagiarism by the users. As has been said earlier, plagiarized contents or posts by users triggers the Steemit platform to mute users as a form of punishment. Ideally, when this is done, the defaulters in question would not be allowed to take part in the steem crypto academy. This is because, plagiarism is a very serious issue in both offline and online writings, artistic works and so on as it deprives rightful owners their due benefits after going through some painstaking efforts with sweats to write and produce same. Therefore, plagiarism is an unethical practice in the Steemit community.

What then is this plagiarism all about?
In the simple words of a lay man, plagiarism refers to the application, employment or the usage of a person's piece of writing and his/her ideas and/or words either in written or spoken form without attributing it to the owner or giving them credit. In other words, plagiarism is the act of using other people's ideas or words as yours without citing the rightful owners. When people take other people's ideas or words and use them as theirs without permission and without mentioning the owners in the work, this act is what plagiarism all about. To help users in the Steemit Platform to be free from this plagiarism and the punishment that follows it, the Steemit community encourages 'citation' as a concept. Citation in this regard, refers to the mentioning of an author of a piece of work, words or ideas in commendation.

For instance, content according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary refers to the principal substance as written matter, illustrations or music offered by a World Wide Web site. As seen in the above definition, the definition of the word content is cited in the Merriam Webster Dictionary.

Therefore, plagiarism is an offence or crime that is either punishable by jail terms or fines. source

Types of plagiarism

source

Accidental plagiarism

Plagiarism doesn’t always happen on purpose. It’s still considered plagiarism when someone copies another’s writing without citing their source, improperly cites the source or leaves out quotation marks on accident. Just because the omission or incorrect citation was accidental doesn’t mean plagiarism hasn’t been committed. This is why it’s important to check any work and when in doubt, give your source credit.source

Direct or verbatim plagiarism

Direct plagiarism, also known as verbatim or copy-paste plagiarism, is an intentional and unethical form of stealing content. As the name suggests, the writing is stolen word for word and pasted into the new piece. The author then tries to pass off the content as their own. A word or two might be changed, but this type of plagiarism is too blatant to be considered paraphrasing.source

Mosaic or patchwork plagiarism
This sort of plagiarism involves just paraphrasing someone else's work without properly citing it. Because plagiarized information is intertwined with many various sources, including the writer's own ideas and perspective, it's often difficult to spot.
This form of paraphrase can be done from a single source or multiple sources. To make it look more original, the writer may strive to alter up the phrase structure or use synonyms. Taking a concept from another article, even if the words are changed and mixed in with fresh thought, is still plagiarism.source

Paraphrasing Plagiarism.
The most prevalent sort of plagiarism is paraphrasing, often known as gradual plagiarism. It's related to the above-mentioned mosaic plagiarism style. The distinction is that the plagiarized material isn't combined with new ideas and research. The borrowed information stays the same throughout the new article when you paraphrase the original idea in your own words.source

In conclusion, as I have read and understood the content etiquette guide through this achievement 3, I understand that plagiarism is the act of using someone's words or ideas without giving them credit. I also understand that when a written work has a plagiarized content that is when the writer wrote same without mentioning the original author or owner of the work. Through this achievement task, I was also made to understand the various types of plagiarism and the effects it has on both the plagiarists and the victims.

I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit community and will do my best to embrace them.
