Achievement 3 - Content Etiquette by @salma78
Hello once again to everyone on this great platform, I am here again to accomplish my achievement 3 task. I am very excited to have reached this stage.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the act of copying one's work and submitting it as your own piece without the permission of the author or without citing the source of the content. The plagiarist does this with the motive of being the writer of the content. Plagiarism is one of the most frown act on steemit platform.
Types/Kinds of Plagiarism
There are several forms of plagiarizing content and I would explain below a few;
1.Self Plagiarism: Self-plagiarism refers to the type of plagiarism that happens when a person reuses his/her own ideas or text in another article without citing the source. Self-plagiarism is considered to be moderate.
2.Paraphrasing Plagiarism: Paraphrasing plagiarism is the type of plagiarism in which a user rephrases the text or idea of another author's work without citing the source. Paraphrasing plagiarism is considered as a serious act and should be abstained from.
3.Verbatim Plagiarism:This is another serious type of plagiarism where an individual copies a passage or a text directly from another author's work without citing the source.
4.Mosaic Plagiarism: In this type of plagiarism, the user copies different ideas from different sources without citing them. It is also considered to be a serious crime.
5.Global Plagiarism: As the name suggests, in this type of plagiarism the user copies the whole text or idea of another author's work and publishes it as his/her work. This type is considered very severe plagiarism and must be abstained from.
The Consequences of Plagiarism
1.It reduces one's reputation.
2.Once being got of plagiarism, you have to face disciplinary action which would retard your image.
3.It leads to failure in ones activity
- Plagiarism can also lead to suspension or being blacklisted.
5.As we experience on steemit here, one's articles are downvoted when a number of times of plagiarism are spotted from a particular user.
6.Articles that contain plagiarism are muted from the communities.
How to Stay Away from Plagiarism
Follow these four steps to ensure your paper is free from plagiarism:
1.Keep track of the sources you consult in your research.
2.Paraphrase or quote from your sources (and add your own ideas).
3.Credit the original author in an in-text citation and reference list.
4.Use a plagiarism checker before you submit.
source
Citation
Citation refers to the act of bringing to the notice of your readers that some specific text, passage, paragraph, or idea is taken from a different source.
Types of Citation Style
Three types of citation styles are used and they are;
Modern Language Association (MLA)
American Psychological Association (APA)
Chicago/Turabian Style
Example of Citation
I have the aim of becoming a teacher in the next 3 years.
"Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers you can choose, but not just anyone can look for a job opening and apply. There are minimum requirements for degrees, licensing, and certification that must be met before you can step into a classroom".source
From the passage above, only one sentence is original,
I have the aim to be a teacher in the next 3 years.
The next one is directly taken from a site which I have kept in quotes,
Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers you can choose, but not just anyone can look for a job opening and apply. There are minimum requirements for degrees, licensing, and certification that must be met before you can step into a classroom.source.
Conclusion
To avoid being victims of a plagiarist, let's always try to cite our source of information when we do research. Thanks to all for reading and passing y my post.
I have read and understood the Steemit Etiquette on Steemit Community and will do my best to embrace them.
My regards;
