What is Plagiarism?

There are so many ways to define plagiarism. But the simplest way to describe plagiarism is it is the stealing of somebody's words, their phrases or even their ideas. I say stealing because he who plagiarises, copied another's work in hopes of passing it as his own.

How do we commit plagiarism?

Plagiarism can easily be committed in the following ways:

  • By taking another person's work and claiming it as yours, commonly called global plagiarism. For example, if you take somebody's assignment, write your name on it and pass it as yours, you have committed plagiarism.
  • By changing how a text was written without acknowledging the source, called paraphrasing plagiarism. This type of plagiarism is also committed when you translate a text but you don't cite the original document.
  • By copying a sentence or paragraph word for word without indicating it is a quote or not your words, called verbatim plagiarism.
  • By taking different ideas, sentences or thoughts from different texts and passing them off combined as your original work, called mosaic plagiarism. Kind of like a quilt, it is made from pieces of different materials.
  • By not citing the source of the copied work correctly, called accidental plagiarism. This type is mostly done unintentionally and is the least severe of the plagiarism types.
  • By copying text, ideas or data from another work of yours, called self-plagiarism. That is using a work that is yours in another piece of work without permission.

How do we avoid plagiarism?

We can avoid plagiarism by doing the following:

  • Whenever you use ideas or words of others, properly cite them.
  • If you want to reuse your own work, do not forget to cite yourself.
  • In case you are paraphrasing, cite the original source.
  • Always check your work using a plagiarism checker of your choice.Source

Now we know what plagiarism is and how to avoid it.
