What is Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the representation of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions as one's own original work. In educational contexts, there are differing definitions of plagiarism depending on the institution. Source

According to Merriam Webster dictionary

The Merriam Webster dictionary defines the act of plagiarism as; “to steal and pass off ideas or words of another as one’s own”. Simply put, plagiarism is the process of taking other people’s words and/or ideas and pretending that they are your own. An alternative definition of plagiarism is forwarded by the Collins Dictionary which explains that plagiarism is the practice of using someone else’s work and pretending that it is your own. Plagiarism can also be defined as the act of deliberately trying to deceive your academic tutor by submitting content which is not your own work.

Types of Plagiarism

Considering the pattern, plagiarism can be of different types. They are:

  • Direct Plagiarism
  • Mosaic Plagiarism
  • Accidental plagiarism
  • Self-plagiarism
  • Paraphrasing plagiarism

Self-plagiarism and mosaic plagiarism are the two most common forms of plagiarism. Source

To avoid plagiarism you need to ensure that everything you write is in your own words. If you’re using someone else’s ideas, or quoting them for example, you need to ensure that you’ve properly cited and referenced the original author. Source
