Achievement 3 by @neethya Task: Content Etiquette

in Newcomers' Community3 years ago

Hello Friends,

source

To continue with the third achievement we will talk about taking content that does not belong to us and pretending to be our own intentionally or not.

What is plagiarism?

The Merriam Webster dictionary defines the act of plagiarism as; “to steal and pass off ideas or words of another as one’s own”. Simply put, plagiarism is the process of taking other people’s words and/or ideas and pretending that they are your own. An alternative definition of plagiarism is forwarded by the Collins Dictionary which explains that plagiarism is the practice of using someone else’s work and pretending that it is your own. Plagiarism can also be defined as the act of deliberately trying to deceive your academic tutor by submitting content which is not your own work.source

The interesting thing about all this is that at some point we have done it, even taking images that we like from the network and using them without giving credit to those who deserve it or quoting phrases from others equally without giving credit to the creator, thus remaining as if we were the original authors. In very bad taste if we take into account that we are detracting from the value that corresponds to the work done by others. If someone will take our ideas for their own obviously we would be offended, so when taking ideas from others we should always make the corresponding references. At Steemit we are motivated to be creative and responsible in this regard.

Plagiarism Type

Self-plagiarism - Also known as auto-plagiarism, self-plagiarism happens when you copy your own writing, whether intentional or not. Often the person in a self-plagiarism incident is summarizing or repurposing their own work instead of writing a whole new piece from scratch on the same topic. source

Complete plagiarism - Complete plagiarism is more common in academic writing than in content marketing or other types of online writing. This type of plagiarism occurs when someone tries to submit an entire research paper as their own without proper attribution.source

Mosaic or patchwork plagiarism - With this type of plagiarism, the work of someone else is simply paraphrased without proper citation. It’s often difficult to detect because the plagiarized material is interwoven with many different sources, including the writer’s own ideas and perspective. source

Direct or verbatim plagiarism - Direct plagiarism, also known as verbatim or copy-paste plagiarism, is an intentional and unethical form of stealing content. As the name suggests, the writing is stolen word for word and pasted into the new piece. The author then tries to pass off the content as their own. A word or two might be changed, but this type of plagiarism is too blatant to be considered paraphrasing.source

How can we cite the source of other works?

When quoting someone else's work we must put it in quotation marks (" ") for example I love from The Little Prince the following phrase "You are forever responsible for what you have tamed". Or we can also place before the sentence the sign > and a hyphen to quote the author or the source from where we take it.

"You are forever responsible for what you have tamed."
The Little Prince.

To cite the source we write the word source in square brackets [] and then in parentheses () the link without spaces

If we want to upload an image we must make sure that it is free to use and provide the source where we obtained it following the same procedure above
