PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism is simply defined as tendering other people's work ,information or ideas as your own, with or without their consent.
This doesn't only apply to work or ideas or text, but also to other media, be it computer code, illustrations, graphs etcetera. It applies equally to published text and data drawn from books and journals, and to unpublished text and data, be it from lectures, thesis or other student's write-up or essays.

Forms of plagiarism includes but are not limited to the following :-

  1. Verbatim (word for word):- using other people's work without clear quotations or simply lifting other peoples work word for word.
  2. Copying and pasting directly from the internet with no acknowledgement.
  3. Paraphrasing the work of other by simply altering few words or changing their form.
  4. Inexert citation :- All Data/ideas of other people used should be correctly sited and importantly do not cite or include any material you didn't use in your references.
  5. Failing to acknowledge any assistance that contributed to a work or project.

We have been thought to learn and always speak out our own mind rather than reproduce the opinions of others without attribution, we are not necessarily expected to become an original thinker, but to be an independent one by learning to assess critically the work of others through weighing off different opinions and from that drawing our own conclusions.

Plagiarism should be avoided because we aspire to produce work of high quality. Once we understand the principles of the project we are about to carry out then we will be able to steer clear off plagiarism, this doesn't mean we can't look through the work of others, on the contrary we can, once proper references and acknowledgment is been done this is clearly distinguished from plagiarism.
Credit should be given to the Authors of whose work/materials we use and it is important to understand the reason behind the need for transparency of source use.
I hope that with this explanation of mine about plagiarism #achievement3, we get a clear and solid foundation about what plagiarism is all about, how to duely acknowledge/reference materials used and how not to be found wanting for plagiarizing. Thank you!!!
