Good Day, Great steemians. This is @itomoabasi here again to perform my third achievement which is on PLAGIARISM. This achievement has benefitted me more than I expected cause since I was young, I've been hearing of PLAGIARISM but I never care to find out more about the offense.

But due to this task/achievement during the process of researching, I'm now more enlightened about the act and I'm going to share that with you, in this work. I'll start by explaining more about the term Plagiarism.

What is Plagiarism

According to the University of Oxford, plagiarism is presenting someone else's work or idea as your own with or without their consent by incorporating it into your work without full acknowledgment.

Here are some types of plagiarism;

  • Global plagiarism.
  • Verbatim plagiarism
  • Paraphrasing plagiarism
  • patchwork plagiarism
  • Self-plagiarism
  • Accidental plagiarism and
  • Inaccurate authorship

Now, over to explaining the four most common types of plagiarism. From my research, the four most common types of plagiarism are;

  • Direct
  • Self
  • Mosaic and
  • Accidental plagiarism.
DIRECT PLAGIARISM

This is a word-for-word transcription of a section of someone else's work, without attribution or quotation marks. The plagiarism of someone else's work is unethical and academically dishonest. Disciplinary actions should be measured on perpetrators.

SELF PLAGIARISM

This type of plagiarism occurs when someone submits his or her previous work, or mixes part of previous work, without permission from all professors or lecturers involved. It also applies to submitting the same piece of work or assignment in different classes without previous permission from both professors.

MOSAIC PLAGIARISM

Occurs when a student borrows phrases from a source without using quotation marks or finds synonyms from the author's language while keeping to the same general structure and meaning of the original text. This kind of Paraphrasing whether intentional or not is academically punishable.

ACCIDENTAL PLAGIARISM

This is when a person neglects to cite their sources, misquotes their sources, or unintentionally paraphrases a source by using similar words, a group of words without attribution.

To round up this achievement, we're going to look at how to avoid plagiarism. It will be incomplete/improper to know a problem or cause, without knowing how to prevent the problem.

HOW TO AVOID PLAGIARISM

Here are five ways to avoid plagiarism; Ensuring to keep a record of your source and citing them, Inclusion of quotation marks, Proper Paraphrasing, Addition of your ideas, and Using a Plagiarism checker.

  • ENSURING TO KEEP A RECORD OF YOUR SOURCE AND CITING

Some people do not deliberately plagiarize ideas, they sometimes forget where the idea came from and sometimes present it as their own. So when doing research, ensure to keep track of the author, where you got the idea from, and most importantly, citing them.

Using citation method in steemit, you place a greater than sign in front of what you copied and then place the link.... Example 👇👇

Steem is a social blockchain that grows communities and makes immediate revenue streams possible for users by rewarding them for sharing content. It’s currently the only blockchain that can power real applications via social apps like Steemit.

  • INCLUSION OF QUOTATION MARKS
The use of quotation marks when lifting a piece of text verbatim from a source that is not yours is an essential way to avoid plagiarism. To be on the right track, it is also essential to correctly cite the original author so readers could know.
  • PROPER PARAPHRASING:
Paraphrasing is simply using your understanding, words to explain an idea from a source that is not yours without altering the meaning. For Paraphrasing to be carried out successfully, one needs to be very careful cause if done incorrectly, then your aim is not achieved as this is still plagiarism.

It should be noted that paraphrasing is about your ability to rewrite a work in your understanding and not necessarily replace words from a copy-paste text.

  • CORRECT CITING OF SOURCES
This is a key feature in any piece of work (research, projects, assignment, or write-ups). Failure, improper or incorrect attribution, recognition, or identification of a piece that is not yours with or without the consent of the writer is the beginning of a writer's Doom.

The full name of the source, the original author, publication date, and every necessary information a citation carries must be cited at the end of the text CORRECTLY! Neglecting this is a very punishable offense.

  • USING A PLAGIARISM CHECKER:
To be on the right track, to avoid being indicted for plagiarism despite being sure that you didn't commit the act, and to prevent accidental plagiarism, it is very advisable to use an online plagiarism checker.

After all, most universities use this to detect plagiarism. So it's like accessing yourself before your instructor does. The application scans your document and compares it with the database of webpages/ publications and identifies text that is similar to yours.

After using this, if a fault is detected then you carry out necessary measures, if nothing is detected, then you are good to go.

This is the end of my work on plagiarism. Hope the effort put to bring these work to daylight help someone out there.
Thanks.
